I'm gutted.

My Rangie 4.6 HSE has done <4,500 miles since her last MOT and it failed on emissions first time around.
Apparently they struggled to get it through emissions testing and this may be because the "popping" noise I asked them to investigate is determined to be the RH Exhaust manifold blowing under the heat-shield.

 They have quoted me £871 to replace it and say the part alone is £450.

I did an e-bay trawl and found a complete RH manifold for £80 that is allegedly in good nick.

Personally I am about as useful as a chocolate fireguard nowadays on cars as I have no garage, a knackered back & hip and I just cannot physically cope with this sort of task.

Can anyone advise me whether it needs a real "LR Specialist" to replace the manifold or whether any competent mechanic can manage it and how many hours the job should take someone who knows what they are doing?

I do understand the RH side is more of a pig than the LH side and the nature of the beast is that the heat-shields often need cutting off and replacing as well etc. etc.

But, if i can avoid the quote £450 part, am I really looking at £400+ labour and ancillary parts still?

If the labour was £50/hour does it really take 8 hours to replace?

I have no objection to any man earning a crust (i have to as well) but I have no idea what is reasonable and what is ****-taking.

Any advice & guideline figures will be much appreciated.

Many thanks.

Dan.

If you ask me that quote is **** taking!??!!

They can be a pain to fit admittedly, but can be done in 4 hours I'd say.

If you can get a second quote from someone else and compare!!!!

Was your quote from a dealer, Indy or general garage?

I'd say get your second hand manifold and get an indy to fit it. Can be done in a couple of hours. The heat shield on the right hand side is a bit of a pig; I took mine off when doing the heads; but with a bit of swearing and metal bending they will pull away.
I didn't refit the heat sheild afterwards and engine runs fine.

Thanks folks. Sorry for the late reply (Xmas etc,)
Got 3 manifolds from Mr. e-bay.
1 complete set and a RH only.
Will try to get best of RH-side ones fitted in the New Year and keep all others as spares as I don't know how many zillion miles any of them have done.

Many thanks, and Happy New Year...

Dan.
