1 snippit for you all the gearbox is the 6 speed 1 out of the mondeo for ****!! sake !!:screaming_bug_eye_f :screaming_bug_eye_f :wtf:

makes you sick doesn't it

same old bloody mistake from land rover again and again

why couldn't they use the transit gearbox? too big?

I was talking to a lad who's cousin has a new puma defender with only 8k mls and had to get a new gearbox fitted, he says that there's some mis-alinement issue with the gear box. Its a typical rumour from the "my cousin" department but has anyone heard other stories like this? By the way do you refer to Puma or TD4 when talking about the 2007 model?

Same problem, the gearbox in my 57 plate defender was replaced at 9500 miles in October, it had become difficult to change up from 1st to second.
They drained the oil out, and out with the oil came brass shavings. LR told the dealer they would be sending a part for the 2nd syncro then changed their mind and sent out a complete new gearbox.
The problem is, the same thing is starting to happen again with the new box (this one so far has done 3500 miles)
One thing to remember: Get the service book stamped up. In the back of it is a section where replacemnt parts have been changed. This will be important at resale to see that the box has been changed under warranty.

Other things that so far have failed in my ownership (my Landy is 11 months old) I bought it early August with 5500 miles on the clock through LR. (16 weeks waiting list for a new 110 with the utility pack)

1 Diff seals replaced
2 Swivel seals repalced
3 Bonnet catch replaced
4 New ball joint
5 Sump replaced (recall)
6 Fuel tank removed, emptied and cleaned out (recall, breather pipe routed incorrectly)
7 Rear door will not stay open (The stay has failed 3 times now since August)

The saddest thing (because its a great laugh for all my mates who drive and told me to buy safe jap 4x4s)
In January it goes back in for possibly major bodywork remedial work. Basically it was so badly constructed at the factory that it will most proberly need a replacement roof, B pillar and offside rear door.
The roof so I'm told alone is £1200.00 and a 12 hour labour job to fit, excluding painting.
The guys at the LR dealership/bodyshop informed me that the 2007 defender is far worse than previous defenders for build quality, but were informed by LR when it came out that it would be the best yet.

On top of all the above (they will need it for over a week in Jan so i'm driving a fiesta they are lending me) It clonks something bad when engaging the clutch like it has a worn uj or something similair, which i've been told all the new ones do :wtf:

Still love it (especially the new dash and heater) and all has been sorted no probs under warranty, however my patience is wearing thin to say the least.

well!! picked up the curticy puma this morning and within about 10 miles i wanted me td5 back!
think the gearbox is 1 of the worst gearboxes i've ever driven EVER! 1st too low, second is good , 3rd not high enough geared , 4th good pulls well, 5th the biggest waste of space ever , 6th very good bit lower revs to speed than my td5. but the gates on the gearstick are too close together
myself i think the td5 is a much smoother pull up through the gears sounds gorgouse, the trani engine sounds like a bag of bolts (sorry but its how i feel about it )
dash is fine if you are vertictly challenged tried to slide the seat forward 1 notch to lean the backrest back a bit and my knees are hard against the dash .
I WANT MY LANDIE BACK!!:frusty:

dont get me wrong i aint knocking the landie it self not much differance from mine ride wise (bit tighter and crisper) but the power plant not to my liking at all the new dash layout is not built with my 'larger' frame in mind :D .

it has opened my eyes and re-inforced my thinking when i was looking @ 90's ,before i bought my 56 plate there were puma's about that were not too much more than the price tag i was looking at (was'nt convinced about the td5) but was less inclined to towards the puma, i'm now well chuffed i went the way i have .
driving it home from the stealers i was thinking well maybe the engine noise is a tad louder, but the gear change is much nicer the engine more torque'y and forgiving, much more power responce in each gear and that engine sounds so sweet you just cant help but want to make it sing :D

Sounds like yer in love cos you've gone all mushy again.;)

she dont bitch at me if i wanna go for a beer , if i'm chatting up women , or if i'm not paying enough attention .
 :scratching_chin:
dont knock it!

I think also that first gear is way to low, however I do alot of heavy trailering, and then it comes into its own
MPG? 25-26 to the gallon, (taking it reasonably easy) about 18-20 if towing.
I expected better to be honest, it seems the less crap they kick out of modern emission engines these days, the less MPG you get.
Which surely is a total waste of time
