Hi all,

Boy this is a busy forum!

I have just purchased an '87 model Rangie.

It hasn't been used off road by the last owner, and looks like it hasn't been offroad much at all in it's life so I'm assuming the Diff lock has barely been used.

I can't engage it at the moment. The lever just won't budge when trying to lever strongly across to the left. It's an Auto and I have tried in Park and in Neutral.

Is there something obvious I'm missing? Or does anyone have any tips for getting this old girl to engage?

Cheers

if it has the original lt230 it will need lever housing cleaning/ lubing cross shaft seizes where it goes through ali cap on passenger side

Gidday thanks for the reply. Can you elaborate on what the "ali cap" is? I assume this job is done from the interior, removing all the interior over the transmission tunnel?

I have checked to make sure it is original LT230 - I did think someone might have replaced it with Borg Warner, but luckily this is not the case as the LT230 was one of the reasons for wanting this model!

I think you can get at it from the outside as I always get my indie to lube the thing at each annual service because I don't off-road myself. That said I do shift the 'low-high' & operate the diff-lock fairly frequently, just to keep things moving.

the dif lock assembly on rrc is the same as discovery ,if you remove consol and rubber gaiter you will see hi/lo diff lock lever assembly on rh side is linkage on lh side held by 2 screws is cap shaft has to slide through in steel and aliminum are poor mix you may get it free by lube and work or you may need to remove assembly and strip cap off etc to clean and free

Spot on mate, thanks for the advice. Had to get the cover and cap right off, give it a few taps (after some CRC soaking) and she was free!

I took a photo of the cover when it was off. Tried to upload it to my gallery but having no joy. It says "1 photo in queue" but when I click on that link it says "system has experienced an unrecoverable error" - anyone know where I'm going wrong?

Just upload it to the thread....
