Depends on the terrain, for thick gloopy mud, narrow, tall tyres with deep, wide spaced tread are best. For soft sand/snow, wider tyres running low pressure and slightly less aggressive tread are best. I run 235/85/16 tyres with a 50/50 road/mud tread. They seem totally vanilla, good in a wide range of situations that don't require a more specialised tyre.

nope.if wider taller tires are better theyd come wiv em.do you employ hundreds of people day in day out to design and build cars?no, but LR do.so lets assume they know wot there doing.

I'm not sure Land Rover employ hundreds to do tyre test though.

But what is standard? 205/80? Hang on though as you could depending on what you buy and what options spec a Landy with upto 33" tall tyres from the factory.

Guess Land Rover f**ked up big time with the 109 One Ton as they fitted wider rims and wider tyres over a stock 109.

along with suspension lifts,engine modifications,exhaust modifications,exterior modifications,air lockers,axle breathers,the list goes on,not really a valid argument that is it:doh:

as for the tyre debate its the most boring debate ever raised

those that have narrow tyres will say there the best
those that have fat big tyres say there the best

and the biggest bollix of all is to say that skinny tyres dig down thru the mud and get grip on solid ground what utter utter bollix

any tyre no matter what make or fcukin size will only go down as far as your diff allows so if so called solid ground is below that your fcuked, whether you got simex,or standard tyres

Narrow tyres do work well on soft/wet mud, but it has f**k all to do with digging down through the mud to a hard surface underneath. They work because the higher ground pressure compacts the mud underneath the tyre and forces the tread into the mud, in a similar way that a studded football boot works.

so why do people lower tyre pressures to give a greater footprint?
