Dear all,

We have had this Freelander td4 2006 for 3mths now, and it has developed this fault. See vid.

the car is doing this on its own, and not all the time and with no particular pattern on idle. Under acceleration then the car works fine.

Leave her on idle and randomly it will start to play around on idle and eventually stall on its own.

Things I have done from searches on the forum and checked.

1) Egr - opened egr and found it spanky clean, I also removed and blocked the vacuum pipe to see if it makes any difference - none reported.

2) Fuel Filters, Air filters - all changed and spanky clean.

3) checked fuel rail sensor - by disconnecting it and car did actually work rough with it disconnected - checked the sensor for corrosion and all - nothing to report - plugged it back in

At this point I'm running out of ideas - any help and tips please?

Thanks

Looks exactly like what my old V8 would do - that was a poor connection on the MAF wiring - wiggle the socket and it would be fine again for a few weeks/months. Dunno if the MAF would cause the ECU to do that on a diesel.

I played around with maf connecting it and disconnecting it several times, and yes the car does work better without it...the whole problem disappeared.

Until I find a replacement part, will I do any damage with the maf disconnected?

Thank you very much

If it runs ok with the MAF disconnected, then it could be the MAF, but not necessarily. Running the engine without the MAF simply puts the ECU into a default settings for MAF and inlet are temperature. You can drive it with the MAF unplugged, but it won't be as good on fuel as it should be. However if you MAF has failed, it won't be running at optimum efficiency anyway.

Understood Nodge68,

and from what I understand the bosch unit is better for my bog standard, any recommendations from where I can get one from the UK, I'm biased overseas not sure if ill find locally.

Thanks

Right, so I got hold of a complete brand new original bosch Maf sensor, stuck it in and car is now doing this:

I unplug the maf, and it works well again, I replug it and the same happens.

I connected the car to a proper diagnostics station and there are no faults to show, also on live data the Maf is shown to be working.

Any idea why the hell this is going on? Starting to drive me bonkers :D

Thanks

watched the video and did u say that's it flat out, wonder if it's gone into limp mode

assume all of the hoses inc vacuum hoses have all been checked

vacuum hoses , check by the egr and vacuum pump and also down by the turbo actuator

map sensor checked and cleaned out if required

turbo vent filter ok

wonder if the fuel pump its self , do u hear the fuel pump when u start the engine

o ring in the high pressure fuel pump

is the crankcase filter ok

fuel rail harness sound and no bad connections

when u disconnect the maf are the connections all nice and clean and making good contact

or maybe the battery needs to be disconnected and left for 15 mins, but of course make sure u know ur radio code

just trying to think of things u could just check without spending any money and checking them off the list by going through the list step by step

but please wait for one of the other guys to verify this , as I wouldn't wish u to get anything else until one of the more experianced with this kind of fault shows up

Yes flat out

so i have an egr delete kit fitted.

vacuum pipes? where are they?

I don't hear the pump whining at any point but - bought a new fuel pump and filter today will fit and see if these bloody sort it.

Bmw brether mod - waiting for it in the mail. - but checked the current breather and its not filthy.

Turbo breather oki too.

maf sensor cleaned with contact cleaner and all, should be doing its job

Fuel rail harness - removed the sensor clip and the car does work worse - so that means that its working right no?

disconnecting battery for 15mins - that i did not do yet.

Checked the plug its pluged properly.

Left battery disconnected for 30mins, but still the same.

I noticed today, that on start up, the first rev to 5k is without any difficulty, the second time a floor it is lame, then 3rd time it just doesnt let me rev.

I also noticed there is a smell of fuel from behind the car.

Your suggestions and ideas are all very welcome.

Thanks

sounds like the engine isn't getting enough fuel

not sure if any of the fuel lines are dirty or maybe bad fuel

fuel pump or blocked fuel filter, or if it's been out a leaking o ring allowing air to be sucked in

there is also that o ring in the high pressure pump

maybe starting with the fuel supply but maybe someone else maybe able to pick out what's wrong with ur errors

if u turn ur key so ur ign comes on u should be able to hear ur fuel pump for around 15-20 secs ,

have u tried it with removing ur filler cap so that the vent pipe is ok

sorry I can't be more help but just thinking in the step by step process

Bought new pump and filter today, will fit on thursday hopefully...fingers crossed..will let you know.

Thanks
