Big shame that is...

Altho its just like the D1, easier to buy another with a decent chassis but bad body ect..

It'll be another 18 months until I get one i think and ill be happy to let prices go down first lol.

Just starting to look at problems that are likely to pop up with the D2s but its nice to see a rebuild so ill be looking out for more pics on here!

Mines had issues, but nothing really 'Land Rover'
The prop UJ sheared, the alternator died and the starter motor gave up. So far ive been lucky! But when I serviced it, all the oils came out the same colour as they went in, so I either service it too much or its reasonably healthy!

As to whether:
A) would it fit
B) would the rest of the car work such as electrics etc
C) 6bt or 4bt
D) would the extra cost be worth it over the ease of sticking with the tuned td5 i already have
E) etc etc....

A) Possibly, I've never really took much notice of the room available in a d2. If it helps I can get measurements.

B) I should think most of it will, stuff like rev counter may not, unless theirs an output on the alternator.

C) 6 or 4, again I suppose it depends on the room you have available.
4bt will be harder to find in the uk though.

D) Yes! Their really is no comparison, but as I mentioned earlier it depends on what you actually want out of it.
And the td5 is worth a few quid to offset the cost slightly, as was my 200tdi that was removed to make way.

Like I say if you want to know anything, give us a shout and I'll try and help.

Fair points! What are the engine/gearbox mounts like?
If im going that route ill need to get a donor sooner rather than later from somewhere

I think it should be a given that early ones will be like this, and probably later ones too. To be fair this chassis youd see from just laying underneath so wouldve been obvious

Engine/gearbox mounts on the daf 45's are at the front of the engine and the big ears on the gearbox.
Neither of which are any use really.
The problem with the ones on the front of the engine is the steering box is in the way.
You could fit p38 steering box and have a drag link made to suit.
The the big ears on the gearbox is where the bulkhead is, or on my 90 it is anyway, and my engines not far off as far forwards as it can go. (45mm ish of the front crossmember)
Should be able to see original mounts on this pic.

So their are bolt holes in the middle of the block that are used for different applications.
You can use all 4 holes like some people have, or 2 like me and a few others have.
Mine are made to suit 200tdi engine mounts, and being on a galv chassis I wasn't going to be welding new mounts on, so it had to work.
So I used the 200tdi engine mount on the drivers side, just re-drilled to suit block.

Passenger side I just made myself once position was set.

Gearbox/transfer box mounts are moved.
As I said, standard big ear ones can't be used in my instance.
So I have drilled and tapped the adapter plate and bolted one mount to that.
The other one is on the bottom of the transfer box as usual.
Obviously the mounts are further back than standard so I've bolted a piece of 6mm plate to the chassis and welded the original mounts to that.

To be fair it'd be a lot easier if you where just welding them direct to the chassis instead of ****ing about like me.

The TD5 is a different kettle of fish to a 300.

Forget a 4BT.

Then work out on paper if a 6BT is better enough over a sorted TD5 to be worth swapping.

TD5s will do 200bhp quite easily

I think mine is ~220bhp, but tbh you have to throw a bit of cash at it to get that reliably. With resale on the TD5 you'd probably spend less cash on a 6BT conversion - assuming you could get it to fit (which I doubt without serious bulkhead mods).

Drizz, I saw your shock mount question on the D2BC, as far as I know nobody makes a front shock relocation kit. The alternative would be to fit a D1 twin shock kit with just an outer set of D1 shocks - but I think it might foul on the ARB.

How come you are after doing that?
