Hi

I've seen a lot of guys put the box for the controls in the engine bay. Then it will be more protected and nobody will see the white cable ties. Only problem is, then you will have to open the bonnet every time you want to use the winch.

The leads are a bit short to do that, i had intended to do that, and no i wouldnt need to open the bonnet as it also has a wireless remote that works great

does it work?

it works a treat!!! its 12000lbs / 6 tonne

I really, really like that - takes the P38 from a 'soft' looking real offroader to a proper, go-anywhere looking vehicle! Obviously has cost a fair bit of time and effort to do, so what you gonna use it for? And don't say winching!!

i live on a mountain and i also do a little bit of farming, ill get a land anchor and use it for self recovery and for getting up to the high lands to sice stock at the back of my house.

Angle of attack looks a bit low tho.
actually its not. that pic doesent really do it justice. plus the suspension is on the deck while i was working on it

like it but....

is it just me or with those wrap around bars, light guards etc. it looks a bit like a gaylander

NEVER!!! when it actually goes off road people would never think it was a gaylander!! i think it looks aggressive as hell!! but thats just my taste

well here you go. 12000lbs winch fitted with the factory winch tray bull bars light guards and fog lamps!

im sure some people will say it looks better as original but each to there own.

Looks awesome - no way it could be mistaken for a Gaylander...too big, too agressive and anyway weight of the winch would have made the doors fall off by now...thats proof enough lol

My only comment is...all looks great, much better, but definitely time for some new tyres now...and matching ones:p:D

Oh dont talk to me!! Seems the world is out of stock of general grabber at2's in 255/55/18 popped one before crimbo and can't locate one since. Been told there is a tyre shortage at the moment.

But thanks for the comments!!

Looks good, not rearly interested in the winch but I envy your Brush Bars, still trying to find a pair, have the A Frame and Light Guards, any help?

Hi,

What model of winch did you use?

I know that the factory winch tray was sold with a Warn winch.

Did you have difficulties to fit another brand?

Regards

Florent

Very nice. Are the bullbars required for the factory kit? All the ones I've seen fitted seem to have them so I was just wondering...

no not essential, but the tray defo is contoured to the bullbar im sure it can be fitted without it. put it this way. the winch plate has no bolts that connect it to bullbar

The official specs say the winch tray kit must be fitted with either the factory A-bar or full bullbar, although it doesn't actually fit to either.

Where did you find your tray kit P38? I've been looking for one for ages. Was originally promised one, but never heard anymore.

was in the right place at the right time. saw it for sale on flea bay, it went up for sale i offered the guy a load of dosh to sell it privately!! 3 days later it arrived brand new in the original box never fitted was delighted.

I'll have a set of 5 brand new tray kits in the shop in few weeks.:)

Hi, may you tell me the distance between bottom of the tray where winch bolts
and bar? On mine it looks like there's only 170 mm. A bit short for some winches. Thanks Florent

I know it's an old thread.
Are you having twin alternators ? what capacity?

If you fit twin alternators you would be as well to fit a second that is identical to your main engine alternator so that if the main fails you have an identical unit under the bonnet that can be swapped in place to take over while you source a second.

I'm in the middle of fitting a second alternator set up on my 200Tdi Discovery and have adopted that as my principle against my initial idea of having an after market 200A alternator that would really pump out the power at more than 150% power of the original 65A unit fitted, but the way I have gone now makes life so much easier in terms of future repairs and maintenance, standard parts mean cheap and readily available off the shelf.

Hope that helps.

Problem with those winches are 1) it is electric and given the P38's infamous electrics more strain is exactly what it needs. 2) you tend to drive into getting stuck so usually the sensible way out is back the way you came. If I'm going anywhere slippy I bung the Tirfor in the back: awesome bit of kit.

I've got a factory winch tray in the garage which I've been meaning to fit for ages... just haven't got around to finding a winch that will fit nicely in there!
Power also wouldn't be a problem for me... I have a split charge system, with a second MF31-1000 battery in the boot.. and twin +ve/-ve heavy duty cable running through the vehicle to connect it up :D

I also have a line on a factory winch tray cover.. I just need to see if it's still available, and if so, see what the internal clearance is to try and find a winch that will fit in the tray and allow the cover to still fit on.

Nothing stopping you from fitting it on the back in a custom bumper.

If I'm going anywhere slippy I engage difflock and let the mud terrains take me where I want to go.
