The tail gates are like new and epson green I am going to nick them and stick them on my w reg epson vogue which is the newest car I have but has rotten tail gates which look more like they belong on an n reger
this is the first tractor engine RR I have had. I have always tried to steer clear of oil burning RR.s
I have had a few lancruiser amazon diesels they were awesome engines

I think you be right what sort of job is it and how much and where to get the parts
searching this forum didn't come up with any info on my manual gearbox fault

It's box out and strip. The only gear were the first motion shaft is direct coupled to the main shaft is 4th all the rest go through the layshaft. Either the first motion shaft has stripped or the layshaft has dropped or a combination of both more than likely. Lots of bits maybe needed. Maybe better with a secondhand box. It will be an R380. Overhaul instructions in RAVE for them.

I am very familiar with constant mess gear boxes I'm just not sure it's worth the cost and hassle of fixing it

Depends what the motor stands you at i suppose. Stripping box and fitting new parts would cost a lot more than a secondhand box i would think. And you still have to take it out and refit. Taking old out and fitting secondhand takes less time. Good secondhand sounds a better option. If you can find one cheap. And if the motors value will stand it.

if you got drive in 4th only as wammers says theres no drive through lay shaft which is usually caused by poor lubrication, low or contaminated oil, input (constant pinion)and lay shaft teeth are heated to a point that they they can be worn off ,usually does brgs too and case around brgs ,i would get another box as yours is unlikely to be rebuildable as in the case were rear of layshaft shears of in clean break due to weakness in part loosing 5th gear but easily fixable, the loss of all but 4th which is not a gear as such but straight through drive means non through layshaft which is usually catastrophic
