this could be fuel filter or air filter ,fink they are takin yer trousers down. . . .:D

First thing to do is check Air Intake pipes for damage ie. cuts or splits and security of large hose clips.
If no damage is found you need to get Test Book on it to check "Boost Pressure Control input to the ECU.

I have had exactly the same problem with my freelander 1.8. Don't buy an ECU. I bought a reconditioned one as I was also told this was the problem. I had the same problem with the Lambd centre. I have just come back from the garage and the fault is fixed. The fault lies with the fuel pump. The fuel pump we have only has 1 valve. This had gone and was not getting the fuel to the engine. Have your mechanic check the pump for pressure. The pressure should be 3.5bar and should hold at that pressure. If it doesn't hold it means the valve has gone. It has just cost me £300 + VAT for a new pump. I bet this sorts your problem. My Freelander is now a dream to drive and is 1000% better than before. Let me know how it goes.

You need to get an engine diagnostic check done on it. my old one did this and it was the ecu out of sync. cost a few hundred to sort it though.
