My 300tdi will only do 40

got a 300tdi last week and on way home it would only do 50. And up hill about 20 and would chuck out black smoke for fun. Any ways half way home head gasket went. Fixed that on Wednesday. Plus a new head. Starts 1st time all the time sets of like it should. But won't go over 40 and when I do kick down it makes it slower and chucks out lost of black smoke. 1996 R reg auto. But has got a manual fuel pump on it also no air box just a snorkel. Been told I don't need a air box as the manual fuel pump I done need a maf.
Any ideas thanks

if its got a manual pump maf or any electrics is irrelevant, if its black smoking it has excess fuel for air ,are you getting turbo boost air to manifold

Also you do need an airbox, or at least a filter of some sort.

+1 **** from lack of filter restricting airflow and/or damaging gas management. Problem could be anywhere with careless previous owner.

Take it back and get your money back. Did you not test drive it before buying?

Been messed with should be EDC at that age for an auto.
Friends 300TDi auto does more than that and has EDC
