Hi,:)

I just need some advice please, i have a disco 300tdi with standard suspension, i have bought some disco one steel wheels with a view to doing a bit of green laning and to use as a set of winter wheels to protect my set of freestyles. My question is, do i fit mud terrains or all terrains, i was thinking of fitting BF Goodrich A/Ts but have been told they are difficult to balance? i know they are dear but everyone says they are the best, at the other end of the scale i could put on a set of insa turbo dakars, Cheap but are they safe on the road, please help me, any help or suggestions would be much appreciated, Cheers and Merry Christmas, Steve.:mad:

BFG's are great but why spend up to £100 a corner when you can get good tyres for half that. We had Dakars on our last disco, unstoppable off-road but noisy on-road. We're now running on Recip Trials, they're much quieter on-road and haven't let us down yet.
 
I would go offroading before you make your mind up. It depends on how extreme you want to go.

I have run on and off road on A/T's, M/T's and extreme tyres. For a good balance I would say mud terrains.

I am currently running Insa turbo special tracks at the moment. They are great off road. Noisey as hell on road and don't handle to great on tarmac either.

I previously ran on BFG A/T's which as you have already said don't like to balance. The mishape which causes severe wheel wobble.

Prior to that I was running on Colway M/T's which is the ideal balance.

I would say that your feelings of Insa Turbo Dakars is the right choice. They have the same tread pattern (near as dammit) as the colways and BFG's and are only about £50 a corner.

I would buy Insa's again but not the special tracks.
 
Cheers for that fella, the Insa Turbo Dakars are remoulds arent they , are they anygood on the road and in the wet? Steve.

They are remoulds.

The colway muds that I had were good on road. Although the tread pattern is similar the composition may be different. Zan79 and Boomerv8 would be the best people to ask. They used to run on a set of dakars.
 
I run BFG AT's on my Disco 3 door 300 Tdi, and it's the second set I've had. Previously I'd had one set of Colways and one set of Pirellis. The main difference and why I still buy BFG is they are far better overall than any of the others.

Pirellis lasted ~ 17k Colways ~ 10k BFG's about 20k but sold on ebay for £250 ... I only changed them 'cos the edges were worn and had lost 'bite' off-road. The currrent set of BFG's have been on for ~ 8k and stilll look and perform as new. This is with every (about) second weekend towing the caravan as we go to rallies with Caravan Club, which will always include some green-laning in the area we visit. Every other weekend either green-laning or off-roading at P&P's. The on-road performance is extremely good.

IMHO, this extra mileage from the tyres saves me money and hassle.

I am, however, looking to eventually get a set of Kumho or Insa Muds on a separate set of wheels for just off-roading. If you're mostly into green-laning, as I am now, then I would recommend BFG's as being the best for all-round use.
 
Never bothered to balance them, and never had wheel wobble, other than the usual fast corner, inside wheel on edge of road and crap steering damper wobbles ... ;)

To qualify that a little ... I use Black Circles and a close garage to fit them who I trust .. their balance machine isn't big enough (31 x 10.5 x 15) to balance the wheels anyway ...

To be honest, how long do you think balancing lasts when you go off-road? When we off-road we drop tyre pressures to 15 / 20 psi depending on conditions. Green-laning we don't change pressures at all, just go with what we're running. Typically we run ~32 psi rear 28 psi front ... but these also change regularly depending on load and what we're towing.
 
Bear in mind that 31 x 10.5 x 15's don't quite fit the stock wheel wells and, especially the rear, you might need to trim a little off the wheel arch. I didn't bother so the rear wheel arch is bent and scuffed a little at the bottom, but I'll post a pic tomorrow to show what it's done . tbh it isn't that bad, really. ;)
 
I fitted a set of 235/75/16's greenway machos. to a set of disco streel rims. I fitted em my self using a pair of tyre irons. They've never been near a balancing machine. and have made 2 runs from Lincoln to Yeovil and back without a single wobble or glitch. (Apart from one flat tyre) but it went at 70 on the motorway and Mrs B didn't even realise it had blown she just said "what's that funny noise" wasn't till we stopped that we were 100% certain it was the tyre.
 
BFG Muds voted again as best tyre again this year by 4x4 magazine. Use them on me deepender fantastic off road have noticed little difference on road between them and my old BFG AT's. No noticable noise difference buts thats in a deepender slower and noisier anyway:cool:

Picture of offside rear wing/valance bit that gets scuffed and bent if you don't cut it. This pic will give anyone an idea of how far they need to cut if they get this size tyre for a Disco.

These are BFG AT's at 31 x 10.5 x 15, fantastic all-round performance and if you're mostly road and green-laning IMHO they can't be beat.

Sure the BFG AT are not cheap, but all points considered, they are the most durable.
They are not cheap for a reason, and this I feel is because there is a demand for them.
I have done perhaps 15k miles on mine, and to be honest, this is all 'on road'
They are just as good as the day I put them on.
If I don't get a serious puncture, then I expect maybe 50k miles out of them.
I didn't have any problems balance wise, but then again, I don't much go over 70mph,
I think if you were going to do a long, difficult trip, through all various surfaces, then BFG AT is the tyre you need.
Tarmac, mud, rocky stuff, grass, soft sand, gravel tracks, I know which tyre I would put my trust in.
