Well it might not matter to you, but it might to the op.
He said he was changing to muds, he didn't say he was buying brand new. You can get amazing deals for second hand muds, and he stated bfg, not the very latest.

How different is the km3 to the km2 in real world situations? Is it worth the extortionate price tag, with only a small improvement over the previous design.

You act like what you are saying is FACT, but tyre choice is largely down to one's own experience's. I know loads of lads that use the pro and rate them highly, so I'm not so sure where the attitude is coming from.

The coopers pulled me through this trench with ease, even towing another Landy out that had got bogged a bit further down. They are a mud tyre, and they are well designed, nigh on impregnable to punctures too. I'd highly recommend them to the OP. You won't regret it.

Coopers are good, not tried the new bfg, the old ones were pretty good. But I liked the xzls on my 90 and deestone extra traction on me 110. Alot of compromise though.

I ran Discoverer STT (not the Pro) for a couple of Years at 285/75/16, as a compromise they were very good from my experience.

Briefly swapped to BFG M/T before going full beans on the Fedima’s and I really couldn’t choose between them - Cooper sidewalls were a bit softer, which worked well in the mud. BFG were a bit quieter on road from memory - depends what you’ll be doing most of….

I have that pattern on a 90 at the moment. They are dreadful in the mud compared to every other tyre I’ve used. Which is a lot. We have a shed with 20+ sets of Land Rover tyres.

I also know some people who have them too. They stopped coming to trials that were really muddy as the tyres where so useless.

KM2 and KM3 are hugely different tyres. Just Google and take a look. Think the rubber compound is different too.

And I’d have thought it would be fairly obvious when someone asks about tyres that they be asking for what is currently available. Not defunct products that aren’t sold any longer.

‘tis true, I wouldn’t use a compromise tyre for serious mud plugging, pay & play and Greenlaning was the limit on the STT but it depends on your intent really. I had a lot of time for the Recip Trial, probably a close second to the Fedima in mud but prone to side slip on a muddy slope - particularly on clay…..

I just stick to carpet slippers on my 90 now, allied to knowing a) what I can do and b)what a 90 can!

Totally agree, that was my point I was trying to out across, they are a decent tyre for greenlaning and p and p, and general Landy use. I don't know too many people who just do bog runs here in the UK.

Re-read what I wrote.
I was suggesting the stt pro which IS a current tyre, I said they were better than the km2.

Yes it is like banging your head against a wall. Completely!!!!

I know you said the Pro. But it still stands that the KM3 is a far superior tyre. That was my point. But you kept labouring the point you were comparing to a discontinued tread pattern that held no real relevance. I was only taking non Pro STT with the person above who posted a pic of their vehicle running them.

Each to their own. I quite like the old SST on the road. And my Uncle said they were quite good in the snow. But they a bloody hopeless off road IMO.

I’ve got a set of Maxiss Workdrive AT’s on my Jimny that I’d rate better at everything and especially mud.

While I’ve got some Kumho MT51’s on my p38. Which are meant to be a mild MT. But they work way better than the STT’s off road. And are just as good on road.

My 88 is running General Grabber X3’s. I don’t think these are as good as the BFG KM3 off road. But probably slightly better on it. But I liked the red side wall writing on them…

I’d say in the U.K. the BFG KM3 is probably the best road legal non remould tyre you can buy. Interco make better more off road orientated patterns, but you can’t get them in the U.K. And Simex seem to have vanished too, although they were more extreme off road biased tyres.

The only non remould I’d potentially rate higher than the KM3 off road would be the Yokohama X-M/T. But this is only speculation, as I’ve not used them yet. I suspect the KM3 would be better on road however.

It comes across as me labouring the point because you always seem to think you have THE definitive answer to any tyre question asked on here. As soon as someone voices some other opinion, they're deemed incorrect. This is just not the case.
We all have opinions derived from experience, but they are opinions, not fact. As with most things on our vehicles, it's all about compromise.
Ideally you would have two sets of tyres, one for road use, and then a massively open, aggressive pattern for rough stuff, obviously. I feel the stt pro is a good compromise tyre.

Further to the km2-km3, the tread pattern is only very slightly different, and the grooves are slightly more open on the km3. I'm sure they are a good tyre, but for the price that's asked for them, and considering I have experience of running both bfg mud patterns that preceded the km3, I certainly wouldn't consider buying it for my uses.
I like the look of the general grabber Mt, but for me, now running two sets I will likely go for a remould mud tyre that's more aggressive than any of the tyres that have been mentioned.
