To much black smoke
Strange it should fail, because these cars normally have a particulate filter (diesel cat).
If it were a non-cat diesel then: Dirty oil, worn piston rings, fuelling turned up too much.
Probably the cheapest fix might be to do an oil and filter change, when was it last serviced?
Particulate filter and cat are different things  the cat wont stop smoke/soot and it wont have a paticulate filter its to old.Strange it should fail, because these cars normally have a particulate filter (diesel cat).

As allready said put a new air filter init, do you generally drive vary carefully?? if so give a good thrashing to clear the intercooler and pipes of any excess oil this will also clear the exhaust, check for any big boost leaks ie split hoses.
Have you got the imission print out if so what were the readings? were they getting lower with each acceleration or did they stay constantly high?
As already mentioned fill it with veg oil or biodiesl, most testers think the machine is faulty the readings are so low.
