My 300tdi failed its MOT and i'd just like a diagnosis as to one of the fails please -

'' EXHAUST EMITS AN EXCESSIVE LEVEL OF METERED SMOKE FOR A TURBO CHARGED ENGINE ''

anyone any ideas

thanks

Strange it should fail, because these cars normally have a particulate filter (diesel cat).

If it were a non-cat diesel then: Dirty oil, worn piston rings, fuelling turned up too much.

Probably the cheapest fix might be to do an oil and filter change, when was it last serviced?

running rich (fuel pump turned up)

turbo tweaked

intercooler hoses collapsing (i think)

a few possibilities but im sure there are more

Particulate filter and cat are different things  the cat wont stop smoke/soot and it wont have a paticulate filter its to old.

ha yeah, i guessed that bit.....what is/could be the cause?
Soory peeps wasn't trying to be funny thought you didn't know what they ment by it .
As allready said put a new air filter init, do you generally drive vary carefully?? if so give a good thrashing to clear the intercooler and pipes of any excess oil this will also clear the exhaust, check for any big boost leaks ie split hoses.
Have you got the imission print out if so what were the readings? were they getting lower with each acceleration or did they stay constantly high?

i'll try a new filter, and as a rule I do drive carefully, for fuel economy more than anythin, so i'll give it a bit when i'm out next:). I havn't got the printout with me to check either:(

Hi Iv'e had that problem in the past due to local driving get it on the motorway build up the speed over a couple of miles nice and steady and give it a good run. Worked every time for me so just before the mot I hit the motorway ...Tony

Works over here as well. If you take an "Older" oil burner for MOT (ITV) the first thing the guy checks is the engine oil level. If its not on the button you fail. Bye Bye ! Reason is if when he puts the sensor up the pipe and its too high he will put it outside and red line it for a while. Then he tests it again ( he wants to pass it). He wants the oil level OK in case he blows the engine. Works for me!

As already mentioned fill it with veg oil or biodiesl, most testers think the machine is faulty the readings are so low.
