94 LSE reg 5/94 so has cats currently.

Looking to replace the whole system as its getting a bit rotten in places.
Now do I need a Y piece with cats?
It seems I may not pass the emissions without them but it runs on LPG which helps I gather. Passed easily this year with cats.

Obviously I don't want to swop the whole system headers to tailpipe and then find I can't pass an MOT. I suppose I could change the headers, keep the Y piece and change the centre and tail boxes but that would defeat the object by having a restrictive bit in the middle of a free flowing stainless system. Was looking at one by double SS.

Someone also mentioned that its weight has something to do with it? Over 2.5 tonnes.

Anyone been here?

my 91 3.9 didnt have cats but some that year did.MOT man never bothered me about it and always passed(on emmissions at least). If presented on lpg it has to be tested on LPG, so should pass.Dunno if your required to have em though....
 
both my p38s have had the cats removed and fly through mot every time they dont even bother to test the emissions as they are so low
all i did was cut the cats out and weld in a pipe but you need to keep the sensors in place for the engine to run properly
you can then install a s/steel system from the y pipe back mine are janspeed they were £399 when i bought them 3/4 years ago
when the cats are removed the benifits are as follows 1 better mpg 2 more power 3 30% louder exhaust sound 4 engine runs cooler 5 cheaper than replaceing cats
you will need to tell your insurance company they have been removed my insurance company aviva dont charge for this modification but others may well charge
 
a few people on here have reported trouble with double s systems

I would recommend a rimmer brothers one as for the price they are excellent. just make sure its fitted properly so it will last the lifetime of the warrenty!
 
Rimmer system is a poor and strangles compared to others on the Market!
But it is a cheap stainless system and you get what you pay for!
If I remember right you have gas fitted so you do not need the cats as you can present it for Mot on gas and test on gas not petrol.
I would just cut and replace the cats using the original y pipe and replace with a stainless back system to save on money.
There is not hard set perfect system out there at the moment and as always you get what you pay for.
Janspeed do a very good quality cat back stainless system and headman headers are the best you can buy but are not stainless but will not have a corrosion issue the y pipe and be made from the original y pipe to make a very good system, other option is to have a system made to the vehicle bespoke is sometimes the way to go search the net plenty out there do do them
 
I recently fitted the Janspeed stainless catback system to my 4.6 on gas. very nice looking and well pleased. I would be worried though if the system were any louder as you say the removal of the cats will make it. Mine sounds fine at the moment but i think any more would be intrusive. The janspeed sounds great around town and seems to be tuned to quieten down nicely at around 70 so not too loud on long motorway runs.
 
Just spoken to my MOT tester who has told me that as of 1/1/12 if a car had a cat as standard equipment it will automatically fail, regardless of emissions, if the cat is missing.
There is certainly plenty on the web about this and nothing I have read so far suggests any sort of retraction of this.
Anyone else come up against this?

New MOT regulations. You have all been warned by myself and others of this for several months now. All road vehicles made in or after 1993 MUST have a cat fitted. Regardless of fuel used. Present MOT rules state that a vehicle must be failed if any part of the exhaust is missing. Technically at least it has always been illegal not to have a cat on vehicles requiring them. It's just never been enforced before. Next big aftermarket item will be immitation cats.

wot about cars registered after 1993 that never had cats? how does that work then?
 
does that matter if it applies to all road vehicles registered after 1993? or is their some exemption for some vehicles?

Not gone into it all that much but it does state NEW vehicles. So i suppose you could register an import from a country that did not have cat requirement after 93 i suppose. The engine would be emmision tested on year of manufacture and not year of registration. If for instance you fitted a 1991 engine in a 1993 on Rangie, providing you can produce written evidence to the MOT station it would be tested on 1991 emmision standards and not on the more strict cat required later ones. It has been illegal since 2009 to fit a none type approved cat replacement.

If the car was subject to emissions tests, then it still will be, including Cats. If it hasnt been up to now, then it still wont be. It does not appear to be a retrospective act, more an enforcement of "original to build"?

Yeah would seem to be that. I know in Spain if you fit none standard parts it fails the test. Sons father in law imported a Merc and had to remove his side steps and window tint to pass. Then found he could have gone to dealer and have side steps certified as acceptable mods. As they were Merc bits. Back on now but a ball ache i would think. Can't see that happening here, the aftermarket parts industry would collapse overnight. Although if they take it even part way, people with coils on air suspension Rangies may have a problem. Just depends how far they go. Most of the stricter emission things came with 1999 legislation enacted in 2001. So maybe it will be almost impossible to mod anything after that date but be a little less strict on stuff before that. Don't really know we will have to wait and see.
 
the best thing is to keep it the way it was made. modifications can cause problems,why remove the cats just buy another set they are cheap enough now, same with air suspension its easy and affordable to fix why put coils on. that is my personal opinion

That is also a problem, as from 2009 it is illegal to fit none type approved cats as replacements. Replacement cats MUST be to same EU type approved spec as fitted from new. None approved cats are cheap approved ones are not. Regulations mention unapproved suspension and brake mods. This could encompass a lot of things, lowered suspension none standard shocks, discs, pads, the list could be almost endless. How they would check for some mods is open to debate. But as all P38s have air suspension on their type approval, a set of coils would be a pretty obvious mod. It depends how retrospective they make it. I would think maybe they will set a date, otherwise 99% of boy racer type and a lot of off road motors would be instantly illegal. Unless the government see it as an opportunity to rid the roads of older vehicles. Would not put it past them.

Yes indeed some vehicles were fitted with cats prior to 93. But the requirement to have them as standard did not arrive until 1st Jan 93. It would seem the direction to check that a cat was indeed present on vehicles made after that date that legally required them, seems to have been overlooked somewhat since, in certain circumstances. But not anymore if the noises from VOSA are anything to go by. People who have paid large amounts of money for catless stainless exhaust systems are going to be really ****ed off. Whether it runs mostly off gas will i think be of no consiquence, if it has a petrol tank and is capable of running off petrol it will require a cat as per construction and use regulations for road vehicles. Or it will fail no matter what the emissions test says, if it is made after 93 or was fitted with a cat as standard before 93 and a cat is not present.
