Hi

My Defender 110 TDI300 has developed a strange noise issue. The noise has the following qualities :

- screeching, abrasive sound
- sounds as though coming from front of car on drivers side ( probly )
- only occurs when moving
- much more noticable when foot comes of the accelerator
- seems to disappear if clutch is depressed

The car has not been properly serviced for a good while ( bad boy ! ).

What should I be checking ?

Thanks in advance.

Dave

i would agree, had same prob a while ago. you may notice some extra vibration when driving, through the gears. etc.

i managed to get a recon prop for 35 quidys. i believe the ujs can be got from flea bay at 6 quid a go.

Wow. Just had a look and feel of my UJs and the one on the front of the gearbox ( I'm sure there is a proper name but I'm a mechanical novice ) is definitely broken. I can wiggle it about 1.5 cm.

Glad I looked as I reckon it could potentially be lethal - certainly to various parts of the car.

Cheers for the advice,

Dave

yeah that much play is almost certainly going to have fooked your prop - cos that much play suggests that the bearing shells have completely worn away, and so the spider (cross bit in the middle) is now running on the yolks (the bits that hold it) and so will have worn away the holes in them. Take it off, and look extremely carefully at it, and replace the UJ at least. I have also seen photos of a Lorry prop shaft and its lorry when a UJ let go completely - most of that area of the lory was smashed, gearbox, fuel tanks, chassis had big dents/holes in it... Not too pretty.
