Hi all, Hope everybody had a good Christmas.
I need a wise and experienced user to answer a question for me, I have a nasty noise coming from the Gearbox/transfer box area under the floor of my LR discovery 1 TDI300, this noise occurs now and again for an estimated 1-3 second period and sounds like a drill chuck touching a static object when you're drilling something, and seems to stop when you de-accelerate, but this is an auto reaction to the noise, with me anyway. I was told it was the thrust bearing, but didn't change/stop when the clutch peddle is depressed, anyway since then I have changed the whole clutch all together and still the same noise. I suppose the next thing is the gearbox/transfer box? but hoping it's something less expensive/time consuming. I have checked the play in the main bearing, none and the spigot bearing, regreased.
Does anybody have any ideas? Please.
Thanks.
Dave

Is the noise only when your driving, checked the propsh@fts h@ve you still got the rubber doughnut
on the re@r prop or done the 200tdi fl@nge conversion.

Hi Kevstar, Thanks for reply. The noise seems to be only happen when I'm driving and only momentarily for 1-3 seconds. I've just changed the donut, but this noise has been happening for the last 2-3 months, and since then I've also changed the whole clutch, changed all the gear oils and checked all mounting clearances, but still no cure.
Do you think it may be caused by the diff lock? or the diff lock engaging while driving, momentarily?
Thanks again for your reply
Dave

@Dave Nic I doubt if it’s diff lock intermittently engaging

I’d start at the wheels and work backwards checking for play in all ball joints and bushes.

Also check the transfer box input gear (easy job) for wear on the spines where it mates with the gearbox output shaft

Hi Payydg,
Thanks for suggestions. I have checked for play in the front hubs, and all seems good, but I did change the wheel bearings and bronze bush last summer, and had a bit of trouble getting the bush on, ie Ihad to very slightly use an emery cloth until I could get it to push on. (by hand) But I'l check it all again tomorrow.
Just had the handbrake assembly off, cleaned and reassembled, so hopefully that's all good.

I'll have a look at checking the input/output splines tomorrow. I've never done this before, so hopefully is easy as you say.

Thanks again for your reply and suggestions.

Dave
