on top of all the other issues my head gasket or a cracked head has gone.
symptoms to begin with where struggling to pick up through the grears ( which i assume is water going in the cylinders). it then overheated and steam was slightly escaping through the radiator cap. no water in oil and no steam out of the exhaust. i slowly realised the pressure cap and refilled the the system with plain water ( i think it nearly took the full 11 litres ) i drove another couple of miles to get home and by this time steam or white smoke was coming out of the exhaust.
i had to start early for work this morning so i took a chance and drove it to work and it overheated within 3 miles with water ****ing out of the overflow. the steam or white smoke has disapeared and the oil cap is all creamy but the dipstick looks ok still. i would be amazed if this wasnt a head gasket problem or cracked head and would be grateful if someone could possibly tell me which one from the symptoms i have described.
one thing for sure is that given my other problems and bearing in mind that i have had the car for a month i must be the most unluckiest range rover owner alive.........

h/g failed i afraid **** things happen to you with this r/r you must be sick. dont know what i or anybody can say to you gutted j

i only had mine a short period, overheated and liners had slipped, now you have 2 ways to go. fix it and pile more money at it or get rid and cut your losses.

dont go getting all emotional with it cos your on the track to loosing focus if you do. i know ive been there. if anyone remembers the engine out threads etc.(do a search on my posts and it should come up)

i the way i looked at it was i wanted a range rover, always have but never been in a position to buy one and run it before. i would have bought another and will buy another if this one is wrote off, (i'd be annoyed cos of the work i have put in but i would still recover the scap car and keep the engine if possible!!)

i have a top hat linered engine now and if i bought another rangey will that go the same as mine did??

your choices are limited to two simple ones if you want a rangey. keep the one you know or buy an unknown !!!!!

mine is pretty much fine now, bits and bobs to sort but major stuff replaced/refurbed its on the traqck to bieng a good solid car!!

I'm afraid you won't get an awful lot for a RR in that condition - probably far better to sort the engine out then its pretty well sorted and a solid car as stated. Either that or get rid at scrap value and lose most of what you put into it in the first place. Its a bit of conundrum at this point as to what to do next, I've been there too as have many on this forum.

what i am thinking is to get an ordinary car what i would need for work for a few hundred quid max ( basically an old bangor with some mot ) and then have a go
at it myself. after all its worth nowt to no one one and i would rather it sat there than to give it away for £500 or so.
trouble is i know nothing about engines and i am wondering if i could achieve it in simple steps from you guys.
as i said i am going to get another car to tide me over so i am in no great rush.
in the mean time am i liable to do more damage by driving it on short journeys preventing it from overheating.

Well first thing to do is to get the heads off, that wont cost you a penny. Chances are its no more serious than a blown gasket which is a relatively easy fix and not to expensive. My advice is to take your time, get the heads pressure tested and skimmed to make sure they are absolutly flat - this is a essential especially if you have had an overheat situation and just remind yourself its a special vehicle and needs special love

so what is involved in getting the heads off. what do i remove/do first. is there any special tools involved.

what you wanna do is start a right good PM session with wrxfifer :Dsnigger:D

He's just done his so he should be able to give you help.

i have been reading wrxfifer threads with interest and have got a copy of rave and am ready to take this on and also, would this be a good time to check on the cam shaft for my excessive fuel consumption...

i have just been looking at rave for the head removal procedure and basically it says remove 10 bolts in order shown? yeah, well what about all the other bits before you get
to that, i suppose you are just spose to know. typical.

Start at the top and work your way down. label up any pipes with masking tape and screw bolts back in where you can.You just need a little common sense and some tubs/boxes for the bits. Start with draining the cooling system.
