Misfuelling (a bit), what is the damage??

Right, going to have to admit to being a bit of a berk but ho hum.

Stopped at the supermarket to fill up today as the yellow light had come on.

Thinking about all things Christmassy so not really paying attention and then realised that my diesel smelt a bit like unleaded :doh:

Stopped straight away and brimmed it with diesel but wondered whether I was going to have to drain anyway as I know that some people advocate adding a bit of petrol every few fills but in total I put 11L in.

Now by my reckoning I should have around 82L of diesel in there, will that be enough to dilute the unleaded sufficiently?

what vehicle are we talking here? By the sounds of it a disco? (working on tank size)

Some mention a week or so ago that a couple of litres of unleaded (in say 50 litres of diesel) will lower the freezing/clouding point of diesel to below the norm of -12c? As a one off in very severe weather of course.

Can't remember who told me they did it, but if I remember right they said something about helping to keep the jets or some similar part of the fuelling system clean (may be my memory isn't working right though and don't know enough about engines to know whether it makes sense or not).

They only mentioned adding a litre or so every few fills though.
 
I think its summat to do with the burn rate - coz petrol burns alot quicker - the combustion shock wave tends to knock bits of soot and debris off the cumbustion area, including the injector.
 
Wit old fashioned CAV/Simms etc.pumps it was common to add up to 20% petrol in very cold climates like Canada to prevent fuel waxing. Im not sure if this is good practice with modern equipment esp. common rail and the like!

Product sold to clean injectors and pumps is in fact only petrol or similar light oils.Moderate petrol use is more likely to clean injectors than harm them!
