OK It appears I need a new MAF sensor for my 2001 TD5. It's just been read at an independant garage and they tell me the reading is 0 although it appears that there is very little going on syptom wise. (I've driven with it plugged in and un-plugged and can feel very little difference!!) and on tickover if I unplug it, it makes no difference whatsoever! So if I need to replace it do I go for a genuine Landrover one at £90.00 + vat or a patten one at £35.00. The garage state " whatever you do don't put a patten one in as it will bugger up the ecu" True or not? Surely people are happily useing the patten ones, arn't they?
Thoughts please.........

Only genuine....but if u have the EGR blanked there will not be a big difference than with it unplugged.... improved mpg maybe.... if the EGR is still on put a new MAF

Think about it, if you got a pattern one and it didn't work, how could it bugger up your ECU - that's just utter nonsense.

I've used three pattern ones of Ebay now and all worked perfectly and as far as I know still are. Don't listen to the scare mongerers, they're only after your money (Not Fery of course)

Pitcaig;Where are you?

If your close by I've got a good second hand one you could try.

Cheers

That's good of you Pitcaig but Brighton to Falkirk I think not!!
Thanks for your kind offer though

Update on MAF
Well as it wasn't working at all I took it out and yes it was mucky, and dated jan 2001 so I think l had my monies worth out of it, anyway decided that nothing ventured nothing gained. I took both filters/grills off (vey small screw driver and able to pop them out without busting them) and soaked both filters/grills in white spirit and scrubbed up with a toothbrush then very carefully cleaned both contacts/filliments of the MAF with a few cotton buds soaked in whith spirit (did you know they are silver in colour??) anyway dried it all out popped it all back together and put back in motor. What a difference, so so much smother running right across the range from tickover to 4000 revs. now no hesitation at all. So I guess I was lucky but all I can say is if your Maff is naf you have nothing to loose.

have fun all.

hi my td5 disco coughing slightly on accelleration when going through gears is this the maf please ????

pull the red plug from the ecu and check for oil in the plug, if its there you need a new injector loom, not a difficult job and around £40 parts

+l on the ECU red plug clean. I use aerosol based brake and clutch cleaner because it cleans well and dries quickly.

Do both plugs and sockets, then put the up-ended ECU on some kitchen towel to soak up any oil coming out of the ECU case itself.

Cheers

Have tried all the above and no difference gets to 3000 revs then splutters soon as you try and give her more throttle , have just ordered new injector loom will try this first ,,,,
will i need a new gasket with loom: ?

That sounds like the "Turbo Wastegate Modulator" is behaving and needs replacement - about £20 from Land Rover. 5 mins job to do.
