What kind of tonnage would I be looking at, if I was to get stuck, to use a manual winch to pull me a foot or so to get out of trouble. Can't afford an electric winch and not extreme enough to probably need it yet, but manual is ideal just to chuck in the boot.

:)

I work in a hardware store and there is a manual winch I'm eyeing up, high lift jack is on the things to get. At some point.

problem with the cheap manual winches is, IMO, that when they break (not IF, WHEN!) you'll suffer, as the handle doesnt allow you to be at any safe distance! Manual winch is about 20 quid, paddocks have hi lifts for i think 50!

second hand tirfor. the weights they pull are high, into double figgures tons but depends on the unit.Want one?

I've got a hi lift Xtreme and they allows for winching the length of the winch, so in my case near enough 48 inches, maybe a bit less because of the top clamp attachment, I never use mine though, might as well sell it :D

The cheap chinese wire winches are great for lifting an engine or at a squeeze dragging a dead car onto a trailer. But they are useless for recovery purposes. get an hi-lift or a tirfor (I have both) :D

I keep looking at the HiLift Extreme as I like the top Clevis set up,

Again I would say Tirfor or HiLift.

ORRRR I saw this Ausi thing on Youtube which is effectively a drum that mounts to your wheel hubs and thus when it spins it pulls the line in, If you could make a quick release or low profile version you would be well away.

I've got hold of a farking great winch off a gangway crane, was steam powered originally but I'm going for a big ratchet handle. It's got a drum about 8 inches in diameter, driven by a worm gear on the outside of one of the sides. It were free from a feller who used to work for Tyne gangways, it was on it's way to CalMac but they didn't want it.

Probably just aussie how ever to me it just looks like a modified wheel rim, Only issue would be it getting bashed or hung up
