I am now the proud owner of a fairy capstan winch, something I am aware is virtually useless, but, something I have wanted for my series since before I owned the series. This one came up at price I could not refuse, although I was not actively looking and having just had a new baby cannot really afford, it is mine none the less.

There are however a couple of issues that I am hoping are not actually big or unsurmountable problems:

Number 1:
It is originally off a range rover classis. I know the actual winch unit is the same but I assume I will need the correct series mounting plate? These appear to be available on ebay (LINK) does anyone know if they are any good and/or an accurate replica suitable for the task?
OR
Better yet is there any chance anyone has an old one tucked away in the corner of the shed they would be willing to part with for some tea and biscuits (your choice of flavour)?

Number 2:
It did not come with the drive dog for the crank bolt although would have been a v8. Does anyone know where I could source one for a 2.25 diesel?
OR

Number 3:
Is the drive shaft the same for all of these or would I need to swap the drive shaft for one suitable for a series diesel? if i do need to replace the drive shaft for one suitable for a diesel does anyone know where I could source one
OR (spot the theme here)

Number 4:
I have the chassis bracket for the drive shaft but it is for a range rover. Is there any difference between this (pictured below) and the one for a series. if there is and I need a new one these appear to be available on ebay (LINK) does anyone know if they are any good and/or an accurate replica suitable for the task?

Although the unit is currently functional I plan on giving it at least a light strip down and clean. I know these are very basic units but does anyone have a service/parts manual of any description they could share with me? I am sure I will not actually need one and plan on just taking the bottom plate off to inspect, clean and then replace with a new gasket, but better safe than sorry.

Also because these are completely new to me I am not sure how much movement I would be expecting in the handle. It does move and the drive shaft moves accordingly but only by about 25mm (shiny silver one the shaft in second pic) and the slot indicates the handle should move a lot further although I am not sure what I would be actually expecting?

I know parts are available on line but expensive , we’re you going to post some pics
I’ve got the fairy winch on mine and used it a few times can be useful, the manual is online , I’ll link it when I find it, mine has the round driveshaft , this one in manual has a square one, you will need to put in a few nutserts in chassis too

Pics are up. They just too a while to upload. Thank you for the manual. This one has a round drive shaft. I just do not know if it is the correct length for a diesel or even if they were different lengths for different engines

It seems you are missing all the usual bits that never seem to come with the winch when you buy one, all are available new but probably cost far more that the winch cost you.
The bracket for the drive shaft looks very different from mine.
The handle should move a lot more than that when operated, particularly when it is not connected to the driveshaft.

The handle pulls outwards first then pulls towards roller to engage the drive , I can take a measurement of shaft tomorrow , got the 200di engine in mine now but still fits fine

That would be very much appreciated if you could. If I do not need a new drive shaft it would be great.

It has sat unused for about 20years which is one of the reasons I want to strip to and insect and clean. Not knowing how far it should move I did not want to force it. But if it should move more than pictured I will work it back and forth a few times and see if the range of movement increases.

the throw on mine is 20mm which is sufficient to engage slots on dog and clear them when lever in parked position,
you will see overall prop length is 314mm which will be 334mm when extended on mine. its mating to a 200di engine so may look a bit different to yours , the chassis bracket has adjustment on it to centralisethe prop and spring and i just marked out when to drill the chassis for the rivnuts which i think take 8mm screws
hope this helps.
wonder if baseplate can be extended by welding or straighten out that bend rather than buy new but new ones can be 4mm which is thicker than std

I took mine to complete bits and rebuilt it, it wasn't strictly necessary and it was not easy pressing the winch back together correctly.

You can buy the seals and shaft bearings if needed, think on mine just took baseplate off , clean as a whistle inside with nice gear mesh, this pdf same as mine

Many thanks. If you have a 20mm throw then that is Probabaly about the same as mine so that is Probabaly correct. Thank you for the shaft lengths. I will measure mine and hopefully is the same so will For the series without a new shaft.

That is my initial plan and hoping the inside is not too bad and just needs a clean and flush at worst, everything feels tight with no play and smooth rotation.

My bad , just noticed my drawing wrong , I measured from the aluminium housing next to prop to the chassis not from baseplate as shown , which was the 102mm , then as drawing chassis thickness 102mm then 110mm from chassis to pin in end ball.

many thanks for the clarification. Is the 314mm shaft length from the baseplate or from the output of the actual aluminium winch casing?

the throw on mine is 20mm which is sufficient to engage slots on dog and clear them when lever in parked position,
I did a very quick clean and lube of the underside linkage (looks like it has underseal of some sort on it so will need a more thorough clean) and I look to have 20mm of throw so if that is correct I will take that as working properly.

Thank you for co firming the measure. Mine looks to be the same at 315mm so it looks like I do not need a driveshaft for it which is a bonus.

So that means I am only short Definitly the drive dog, and maybe the baseplate that I forgot to measure and compare to your plan.

Was your measurement with the prop extended.
mine was with prop in the parked position also my measurement was to the pin , if so it looks a bit different length to yours
it might be an idea to fit the driving dog first then offer the winch to front and engage the dog and retract it to see where the your baseplate sits and measure up to see if the correct baseplate would match and if yours can be extended by what distance as an option

Looks to be 220mm pin to pin on the drive shaft. Does that sound about right?

Sorry for delay , just measured and mine is 260mm pin to pin
Thank you for measuring and confirming. Means it looks like I do need a shaft, annoyingly, but with your measurements I know what I am now looking for. Once again many thanks for the assistance.
