Im just in the process of rebuilding my 200 tdi bottom end. However Ive become stuck refitting the rear crankshaft journal. It has two rubber T seals that continually destroy themselves each time I try to slide it into place. Ive got through a fair few now trying all sorts of ways and angles. Is there a technique that I am missing????

You need a tool, basically a set of wedges that allow the seal to slids in as you fit the bearing cap.
Some have used shim stock or feeler blades as guides.
Theres a recent post on the series 2 forum, I will try and find it as it has picsof how to make the wedges from some angle iron.

Thankyou Lynall, much appreciated. Somebody on another page also suggested using the cork type as apparently they seal better and are easier to fit. The problem I had wasnt so much getting it in, it was when I would get it halfway down millimetre by millimetre, the rubber would just snap and half the seal on each side would push out. I searched online for videos etc to see if a tool was used, but there is next to no info on fitting them.On the only vid I could find, the guy started to struggle then it was cut to being fitted! I thought about using a couple off alloy plates between a G clamp but figured that tightening one area would just make another swell.
They did make mention on that thread of some of the copy seals being pants, some made their own and had greater luck.
I think the whole stupid idea dates back to the dark ages literally!
Witht he 300 they went modern.

Lynall, when I did my 300 it had the same T shaped seals and they were a pain to get in. As you say, you are meant to use the correct LR tool to fit them. I used a blunt wood chisel and a lot of time and TLC. Was one of the most time consuming parts of the engine rebuild.

Didnt know that, I thought 300 was modern set up, been a few years mind.

This took ages to tease in with the chisel, fraction of a mm by fraction of a mm. Then trimmed top off with stanley blade, but you have to leave a bit sticking up. Are you using lube

Ah, ok. I thought you were pulling my tassel about the the last picture. It does look a bit iffy at the bottom. I had never noticed that before. The rest was ok though
