Probably an email telling you to run out and buy some choke cleaner or possibly a resistor which may bring the MAF back into the correct spec?

Yes

"Quick to perform the clean up. Needed to do it twice but now working 100%."

seams to be a clean up
but with what?

Choke cleaner has always done the trick for me in the past. Half the time MAF's just get dirty with crap comming in with the air...oil...soot etc..
As the element in the MAF gets coated in this stuff it starts to loose its sensitivity and does not accurately detect the airflow. This obviously has an effect on the performance. If you remove the MAF (2 torx) and take a look you will probably notice the element is all black and cruddy. Give it a few blasts with some spray choke cleaner (but DO NOT TOUCH THE ELEMENT with your finger, screwdriver, knitting needle or anything silly other than the spray). Leave the MAF to dry for a few mins then fit it back. All should be well.

Thanks

i don't wish to damage it !

Ha! Good point - I accept Paypal you know...!!!;)
Personally I just use that cheap and nasty carplan stuff from Poundland- Its all similar stuff anyhoo. Just remember to make sure it is totally dry before you put it back in, don't touch the element and you can't go far wrong.

I am not short of cash just looking for the best advice :D

Hi tinytdi,

I checked my MAF but the problem is it's fixed with two Torx screws as you said but they are of the 5-point-start with a pin in the middle, I have two sets of Torx keys, one with and one without central hole but they are all 6-point-star shaped ?? Where can you find such a 5points star shaped key or is there a specific denomination of these ones ?? (My MAF is of the dreadful Bosch make).

My secret in removing those dreaded torx with the pin in the middle? Pliers - then replace them with easier to remove items. Careful though, it the jaws slip off the edge of the screw while your hand is on full grip they dont half pinch yer skin!!!

Went to a specialised shop and saw the correct Torx in a complete set which costs 36 Euro, for a couple of screws that I will have to loosen only once that's too expensive for me. Will try with pliers as you said or else if possible saw a groove in it so that a flat screwdriver can be used.

Ok, so a can of choke/brake-cleaner and a soft toothbrush do the trick.
Thanks.

Hi all,

Heard something today which refers to this thread. I went to a specialised shop (Bosch specialist as well) to get me a can(spray) of brakecleaner, as I asked the guy for the special 5-star Torx with a hole in the middle he said he had no such key, told him it was hard to find as it was to take out a Bosch maf whereon he said: you don't mean the two top screws do you? When I confirmed this he told me not to touch these but if the maf needs to be taken out for whatever reason to take the whole housing out. According to that guy the maf's are calibrated in the factory and if you take it out by undoing the two screws only (leaving the housing in place) he said you can easily/mostly loose 10, 20 if not 30 percent of the performance of the maf. He said he got a big client (Colruyt, big department store with lots of vehicles) who regularly brought in maf's for replacement under warranty. Bosch had a closer look and they noticed they took out the maf's of the housing and now they only will grant warranty if the maf remained untouched in the housing. That's also the reason why you can't get the maf's apart but always pre-mounted in the housing as one set. What do you all think about ??

Hello willo!

Looks to me like Bosch (botch) are looking for a get out clause because they are having to replace so many under warranty, especially when you consider the amount of vehicles that use them
As for loosing 10-30% performance Lets face it ,they aint that accurate or reliable in the first place
And finally What the hell is there to calibrate on them????
If we can set about them with some brake cleaner and a toothbrush to improve there performance, then I think someones telling talking out of there bottom with reguard to the factory calibrated precision instrument bit

If you still have problems obtaining the right key for the maf screws send me a PM and I'll send you some over, or try http://rswww.com

They do propper cleaning stuff aswell
