nar - i know what that is - what I was talking about is a white 4way relay bolted to the side of the fan motor. For the time being i am working on the one above being the motor relay - will check it out when I can

It means sod all what colour your relay is, as long as it is a 5 pin one for a standard replacement, from your picture u show it seems u have the necessary wires to indicate u have the correct wiring... red, brown, blue-red, white-red and brown so a 5 wire relay. That is the heater fan motor control relay. Above is the resistor pack that you state u have already replaced.
But as can be seen plainly the wiring u have has been interfered with...so not standard maybe.

Reet - have checked all relays and fuses - everything is ok. Tried again today and fan came on at low speed once. As soon as I switched to high speed, it stopped working, and won't go again. Fuses still ok. Am getting baffled by this! Any ideas?
Got power to relay above, got ign live to relay above, earth is ok, but still no go

IMO you should try with another known good(or new) blower relay though

that is my intention, but the wiring is a nightmare due to all the a/c additions
might have to invest in 1/2 doz low watt 12v leds to verify volts along the route to the fan
