Lt77 v r380

Hi all,

Which gearbox is better and more reliable and would the LT77 in a 300tdi model.

In the Discovery Mk I, both boxes are interchangeble.

not quite interchangeable there are some differences with bellhousings and shaft lenghts.
r380 is a much better and stronger box. an early one will/may have shifting issues but a later one or an ashcroft recon one will last for years trouble free.
having said that nothing wrong with lt77 at all, very good boxes although getting old now (50's era). as long as you have one with a good mainshaft and use a cross drilled input gear it'll be fine. almost all old or original ones will have a lot of wear on the mainshaft by now, unless used with a viscous box in a rangey when itll be perfect!

OK, I'll clarify. Both Tdi boxes are interchangeable and both V8 boxes are interchangeable.........in Discovery Mk 1s

Where's the option in the poll for.......all Landy gearbox's do the job great if you treat em with respect.

I have a K reg 200 tdi with an r380 and its as good as the day it was built! Not sure if the r380 was in it from new though? And yeah a bit or respect with an old box goes a long way ask them early series owners

lt77 224,000miles with regular servicing in my 91 200tdi still going strong

When your vehicle was built it would have had an LT77 installed at the factory.

IF you have really do have an R380, someone has swapped it at some stage.

I swapped to a r380, alot better change ,but I'm sure with the lt77 it had more grunt , maybe with the gear noise it seemed faster .

Er, where the option for the ZF H4 box?

swapped my lt77 box (reverse gone) for the r380 .straight swap and no mods needed ,94 200 tdi disco .

From a drivers viewpoint there is little to differentiate the two, other than the position of reverse gear.

From a design perspective one difference is that the R380 was designed to accommodate more torque than LT77.

Ahhh ok. I thought it might be a little smoother as the lt77 can be quite clunky

TBH they both can be clunky but that's more down to maintenance. For some reason peeps just don't like doing oil changes, so the boxes wear.

Ignore the LR advice and change the oil regularly - I do mine every 6 months.

Clean oil is the way to go.

If you off-road and particularly if you wade, you would be well advised to do it more often still, to avoid damage from water contamination.

i have a 200tdi wifey has 300tdi hers cruises loads better but jumps out of 2nd quite often mine bit noisy but has done 250k.

That's because the gear ratios are longer with the TDi300.

not greatly ,and exactly the same in 4th

Yup not a lot in it. LT77 3.692:1, R380 3.321:1 the other four ratios are the sames according to my book .
