HI guys,

I had a thread before but I have now made some progress so will be able to make a better post for you to work with.

I bought a 200 tdi from a defender. I removed my 2.5TD unit. Slipped in the 200Tdi unit. I did not touch the gearbox throughout the job but fitted a new release bearing.

I had problems getting in to any gears but the clutch was releasing/engaging. I tried to bleed it through and ended up replacing the master and slave as a matter of elimination. Not really much change after that.

Today i got a decent pedal after bleeding again and some adjusting and although the gears were hard to get in to, I got all of them at some point and drove up and down the street no problems, in both HR and LR. Result!

But my question is ......

Why would my gear positions be about an inch to the right ? I can always find 5th wayyy over on the right and then i work left into 3rd and 1st but from left to right it all seems a bit skewiff!

The gear changes are a bit clunky and the pedal seems to only be doing any work in the last 3rd of the movement.

Any ideas are welcomed. Many thanks

Shot in the dark but could it be an engine mount issue, if the engine isn't sitting squarely (vertical) it could be twisting the gearbox slightly. Due to the length of the gear lever any slight rotation of the box would appear to be amplified at the gear knob. Alternatively was the old engine/mounts not correctly aligned to start with and you've got used to it and now it is correct it feels different?

The mounts look good but I will have a dig around when the rain stops and make sure everythign is good

I am getting more and more worried that it is the clutch not releasing properly but do not want to open it up again before exhausting all the options. Will be bleeding the clutch again on Sunday and try some more adjustments with the pedal to try and get a useable configuration.

If that fails then it looks my week off next week is now full of things to do!

As you have changed the master cylinder check again that its rod is correctly adjusted. A push rod on the slave that has worn short can also give your symptoms.Second Kwakerman about changed gearstick position.
