LR 90 - new toy, but need advice. Newbie

Hi Guys,

I'm the owner of a Freelander (no stick please - I love it) but i have recently bought a LR90 1989 2.5TD 19J. Its a County with some good offorad tyres and the chassis seems mint, doors and sills all ok and overall in good nick with lots of service history on 138K. Love it to bits, drove it 150 miles home at 60 no probs engine wise. I am going to fit all new door locks and i've serviced it but i'm geting a whining noise from the front at 40mph and above. Thinking it could be a wheel bearing but may be a transfer problem????? Any help or inspection received with great thanks. Chorley @ Lancashire.

could be a wheel bearing, a diff bearing, the diff its self or random not connected to the drive train noise lol, would come have a look but its a bit of a trek from essex

Cheeky - I was already in the owrld of real Lr's!!! a Freelander is a dam good car!!! (waits for the rotten veg to hit him).....lol, must admit FL has been great and ive actually kept up with a 110 on an off road track with her. Just. Anyhow, I suspect the wheel bearing, as you know theres nothing but engine noise from the FNS of 90 so i'll do a wobble check this weekend. Anyone any ideas of cost of getting a garage to do it, im too busy at mo and just want it sorting so i can spend, any, if any time, off roading. Thanks for the reply and if any one is closer I can bring to you!!!

Now thats just rude! It holds its own for what it is, and i bet a can make to the top of a hill better than an X3/5 who claim to be offroads? Anyhow pls dont let this become yet anoher Freelander argument, i need some help with my LR90!?

That noise could be anything, I'd look at the U-joints first.

gaylanders are ****e, i went places in a vitara a gaylander grounded out on there is no way it can match a defenders off road capabilities otherwise why buy one

You can do a few checks yourself without going to a garage, jack the front NS up ( choc the wheels ) and if you have them, axle stand under the axle. Give the wheel a spin and try rocking it back n forth, if a bearing is showing signs of wear you'll feel a little give in the wheel itself.
Rinse n repeat for the other 3 wheels, don;t forget to choc the wheels and use axle stands if you have them.

Also whilst parked up, crawl underneath and check the UJ's on the front and rear, you will have a little play in the propshaft's spin but pay close attention to the UJ's themselves, check that they don't move outside of the natural spin, make sure they're nicely greased up.

Check your Diff levels, using a 1/2 ratchet or breaker bar, undo the fill plug and top up until the oil starts to come out.

That'll keep ya busy for abit

Good sense from Paul and G-man.Is it tyre noise?Off road tyres can howl at speed.Lose the frelander if possible for street cred!

Thanks for the advice, just given her a service today, usual oil air and fuel filters, Ive checked the UJs seem fine. Im thinking it may be off road tyres as not use to having them, got wranglers AT on Freelander. After work tomorrow will get the jacks out and give the tyres a wobble!

2 questions?
1. How the hell do you hear a suspect wheel bearing noise driving a 19j ( are you a fecking bat?)
2. How the hell did you manage to do 40Mph in a 19j, was it down hill with a following gale?

Hey our doors fall off when wet too! I also have leaks, rattles and if i don't lock the drivers door when I'm driving it flies open on roundabouts.

1 Any vehicle with any engine can be soundproofed.AFAIK 19jis no louder than other diesels. 2Just today ive been delivering cattle in my 2.5td.In cornwall!Very steep hills!Never had to go into third until the lanes.50 minimum on A30 allthe way!3Most of problems of 19j are caused by operator or maintainer incompetence.4Slagging OPs machine may not help him with his problem.5My doors are hanging but rest of LR is 100%

them cattle of yours musta been feckin calves , the 2009 scania truck that takes our belgian blues and limosins to ashford is reduced to twenty on any sizeable hill . and how the funk you can say a 19j is no louder than any other diesel i dunno unless the years of driving the bugger has deafened ya !

Trailer is 2800kg ifor ta5.Not as bad as the 3500kgtrailer dont get a problem if i get some good speed at the start of the hill.Totally different if stop start.The 2 cattle today were highlands so quite light about475-500 kg.Just a favour for a neighbour usually ionly move my own.Often just one or two at a time if i have morei get a truck.Ther is something somewhere about my soundproofing and it has worked.Deaf cos im an old gitMy mates200tdi was even bettr at hills,flew past mine.

I only have pedigree angus and some comercial sucklers the highlands are a mates.They were quiet but the horns dented the roof of my trailer wot i had kept spotless 2 1/2 yearsdunno if your nr Godalming i went last yr to visit herd nice country anorl.Hope yr blues and lims are going well ive heard beef trade is down again

I drove my 19J all the way back from Hull to lancashire at a constant 60+ no probs, it loved it! As for the noise, erm, what? Sorry it was a week ago and my ears are still pouring blood! It wasn't that bad TBH, but a def noise over the engine, think it may be the off road tyres as Ive now had time and no real wheel movement on jacks. I'll find out when my wheel overtakes me F1 style. Whilst I'm on, my diff lock is really hard to engage into gear, need to really faf for about 5 mins to engage - worn? Replacment something, maybe gear linkage?

Difflock should be fairly easy to engage but for me to switch from low to high, I have to be rolling slightly. Mine won't go into low without taking my foot off the brake. Try that. Don't go rolling at 30mph though obviously. I mean just take your foot off of the brake enough for a tiny amount of movement whilst you change.

Cheers khaos, i did notice that if I put it into 1st and high and just moved a couple of inch then tried to reingage it seem alot easier, is that normal? just one of those LR tricks you need to learn?
