HI.
I have a 99 Freelander 1.8 petrol with 70,000 miles and due to change in job my work is now a 94 mile round trip.
As a result of this my fuel bill has rocketed. I have been thinking of alternate ways of getting there cheaper and was wondering if anyone had fitted LPG to their freelander?
If so how much did it cost? whats the difference in fuel consumption? where did you have the tank installed?

Would also like to hear any probs had with fitting LPG?

Cheers in Advance.

Afore i bought the TD4 i had a go in a commercial fitted with lpg.
I dunt think you get any difference in fuel consumption, it justs cost you less to buy the gas.
And then of course theres somewhere to fit the tank ! this one was behind the front seats (a commercial) so it wernt a problem, dunno how you'd go about it in a normal motor, sept for in't boot

:) .Hi,I got my V6 Freelander about 2 months ago, theres the invoice for the conversion with my other documents it cost the previous owner £2585(ouch!)in August 2005.As far as I know a 1.8 will be less expensive as it a 4cylinder,dont know how much though. This is my first post so ,not sure how to post links, take a look here:The Greenfuel Company - Home. There is lots of information and if You enter Your details they will provide a quote and give an idea of potential savings. This might be helpful too:BP LPG UK.Lastly as a quick guide as to how much its possible to save try:Fuel saving 5.xls.I recon that my savings are around £1500 a year over 18000 miles.:D.

i made some equiries about converting told it will be between £1200 £1400

kits cost around half that but you need to get it inspected before you get a cert for your insurance company

I take it if you get it done via garage then they sort out the inspection?
I think if the savings will be that amount i will be investing in a kit.
Just need to find the most reasonable price.:D

If you are looking at an LPG conversion on a 1.8 k series, two things.A,most people struggle to make them reliable on petrol, and B,if the job wont pay better than that either get a better job or look for one closer to home.
Sorry, but it had to be said.;)

i was thinking of having my 1.8 done but when speaking to the local installer he said that not very good on the k series as the engines tend to run hot. what ever that means lol

further to wot Cashew says......
1) engines running on LPG tend to run hotter than those running on petrol.
2) the 1.8 K series engine tends to run hot anyway, because the thermostat (and temp sender) are on the return from the radiator - not the feed from the engine.
3) the 1.8K series are prone to HGF.
4) LPG does not have the same lubricating effect that petrol has, so you risk burning out valves.

all things considered - I believe yu would be taking a risk of a higher incidence of HGF than normal - and thats bad enuf.

your money - your call

Kits have been advertised at £425 for DIY fitting in the back pages of LRO. I agree that they have to be inspected before use.

I also considered the pros and cons. I commute 40 miles a day and the cost is managable.

I spoke with a few chaps who all agreed that LPG fueled engines definately run hotter and so decided not to risk with my rebuilt 1.8.

Also a friend of mine LPG'd an Omega. He could get from Bham to Exeter on £10 of gas and that was a V6 3.0Litre.

20K on and his car is smoking heavily on startup and getting through quite a bit of oil. Me suspects the valve seals!!
