help just bought my first rr with conversion and it wont run on gas is they anythink i can do to find the problem its a 3.9 v8 petrol fine soon as it swichers over it cuts out please help.

you need to see if there is gas in the tanks, crawl under and see if you can see any guages and any small brass valves on the pipework near the tank. if you cant see any guages take it and gas it up. you cant over fill it and it will confirm a couple of things!

mine is landi les-98 found valves no guages is they anyway u can check the gas solinoid ect.cheers

have a look see if valves are open, that should be fully anti clockwise.

i'm not sure if you can check the solenoids with a multimeter.

i have never tried this but,(if its a single point system)put ignition on and if you flick the switch from petrol to gas then to petrol then gas the light should stay on for gas(try G P G when switching if first doesnt work) this means that it will start on gas(or at least it would normally.)

if it starts and runs on gas dont run it too long unless car is warmed up or you'll freeze the vapouriser. now if it doesnt start then i would say that its either empty or the programming might be out. you could also take the pipe off the air intake and see if gas is flowing, you may need to do the switching and get someone to turn the car over for you.

OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE USING BASIC METHODS AND FIDDLING WITH GAS DONT GO BLOWING YR SELF UP. LPG IS HEAVIER THAN AIR SO CAN COLLECT IN POCKETS ETC, EMPTY YOUR POCKETS BEFORE LIGHTING A FAG.

i know the last bit sounds silly but i just want to cover my arse and make sure yr as safe as you can be!

wen i take the inlet pipe off do i try and start on gas to check gas is flowing and wot do i look for cheers.

the pipe you take off comes from the vapouriser, then more than likely through a valve and into the gas ring on the air intake. take the pipe off where it joins the air intake and not before the valve.

try to start on gas and you will smell frsh gas come through. it will be very pungent(stinks like poo)

yr looking(smelling) for a very stong smell as opposed to just a strong smell. you will know the difference!

i would try gassing it up tho first as the guage cannot be relied on and in the software that you can get for the contoller(leonardo in my case) you can set it for different guages. this means that an empty tank can read full and vice versa depending on the setting!

i notice u are from rotherham im just down the road in rossington if i get stuck wud u be prepared to av a look paid ov course i will come to u carnt find anyone round here at all cheers.

yeah i'll have a peek. if its leonardo control box i have the software and cable so we can pop it on my laptop. i dont mind popping over to rossington so long as its sunday mid to late afternoon (depending on my work) or monday after 3pm(again work) as i'm on afternoons this week (mornings next week) and its a pain doing anything before work and having to stop and pack up. in the mean time gas it up when you can, even if its only a tenner then we can be sure theres fuel there.

i'll send you my number on pm tommorrow and we'll make arrangements closer the w/end

HI. Just joined the forum and spotted your post.

My RRC started doing the same, turned out to be a solenoid coil fault.
I found it by the following method.
(bear in mind I'm ex British gas instrumentation so know what I'm doing around gas and electrics. If you're not happy then don't do it!)

You don't need the engine running or even the ignition on.

you do need a couple of lengths of wire that'll reach from the battery to the vaporiser.

Disconnect the battery then disconnect the large plug from the LPG ECU.
locate solenoids (mine has 3, one on vaporiser, one on LPG line filter and one on the tank)
remove connections to the solenoid on the vaporiser and apply 12v from the battery, observing correct polarity, using your lengths of wire, to the solenoid. If it's OK it will make a satisfying "clunk" If it doesn't, measure the solenoid coil resistance, it should be around 18 Ohms. Mine measured about 5 Ohms due to an internal short I assume. Replacing it cured the fault. An open circuit coil will obviously measure infinity Ohms.

Assuming that solenoid's OK then apply 12v to the connectors you just removed. This connects to the other solenoid/s. You may hear a clunk or 2 from the other/s.

You can then prove that LPG is getting through by slowly releasing the LPG line to the vaporiser. You'll hear/see/smell it easily enough. As soon as you become aware of LPG retighten the connection. Then test the connection for leaks with soapy water.

If the LPG isn't getting through, you may find that one of the other solenoids or the connections to them are u/s. Do the usual wiring checks with a meter/test lamp.

This all assumes that you actually have some LPG in the tank. If you haven't it won't help.

Do all of the above outdoors and don't change any electrical connections while you can still smell LPG. It's very volatile stuff and even the smallest spark can cause an explosion.

Mine also has the AEB Leonardo ECU. It should remember its settings as long as they were stored properly (by hitting return on the laptop) the last time it was set up. It's easy to forget to do this when you're playing around with the laptop and you don't know about it until you replace the battery and lose all the settings. Been there, done that.

AS I said before, If you're unsure about any of this then please don't attempt it. Get an expert to check it out for you
