Ok this is maybe nothing. When I press the tail gate button and release the top half opens, press again and release only one side opens but press and hold and the pull the lower half to open. Is this normal or do I have a problem? I've tried cleaning and lubing up catches and lock mechanism

When mine did that I cleaned the mechanism with brake cleaner and then greased it again. No problems since. You can also check if moving the mechanism on the car side of lower tailgate catches will realign it better, could be sticking because of that too.

so there is a problem I don't feel like a muppet when it's some spoecial design feature. I've sprayed lots of wd40 and cleaned out the muck with a cloth then more wd and it seems to be better but not right will play around a bit more it's not a huge problem but one that is slightly annoying

You need to take the door card off, remove the lock mechanism and clean that up too.

Also your catch may have locked in the closed position like mine did....screwdriver it open....don't use wd40.....I used spray grease from halfrauds when open ...let it settle for 3o secs....slammed it shut and done this several times ...now it works perfect...

as data says take the mat off,,,, break the mechanism down to 4 pieces clean spring with wire wool , spray connectors with electrical contact cleaner NOT WD40 . lubricate spring and lock with Vaseline should be all good ,,,,,
