Arghh..spent ALL day trying to replace the lower steering shaft on my 300tdi, all I have to show for it is bleeding knuckles and a bad back!

I remove the three pinch bolts (one on upper UJ and the two on the lower UJ) and managed to move the lower UJ about 1/2 inch up the pinion on the steering box but that was it, I couldn't get the damn thing off.

On the new steering shaft I bought the lower UJ slides easily up and down the shaft but it would appear that on the old one it is seized solid.

Any tips on how best to replace the shaft/UJ ? Space is really limited for wacking it with a hammer and I can't seem to lever it against anything...

Finally got round to sorting this! Only been a month or so....

Thanks for all the help, a good whack with a chisel in the slots did the trick!

The steering feels much better, a lot lighter and I have no annoying squeak when I turn the wheel now :)

Only thing I noticed is there is a slight knock from behind the steering wheel when stationary and I straighten the wheel? I'm not too bothered but I'm sure it wasn't there before replacing the lower shaft.

Fitting a terrafirma steering damper tomorrow which I've had sat on the workbench for five months...I don't like rushing into things!

Cheers the chisel idea worked a treat! well still ample swearing and knocking but its off! Think this is all thats stopping me lifting the body off now - well apart from a way to lift it! cheers oh and for anyone else lots of WD does help or at least smells nice
