After some advice please. My disco 2 is due MOT & I wanted to get rid of play in steering wheel ( felt like it had no input on steering from 11-1 position ) i found I had play in the lower steering column UJ & set about removing that to replace the UJ with a new item. Anyway after removal, it did indeed have slight play & felt graunchy so it did need doing. Next I had a look at steering box shaft, where the lower section of the lower steering column uj connects to the steering pump splined shaft. I know you can adjust the play out of these by the adjuster on the top, but is there a max amount of free play, before they are considered too worn to take up the slack ?

I take it a a ‘typo’ but the steering pump is hydraulic so no external shaft splined or otherwise.

As for free play that will be zero, so as your aware of the procedure for the steering box adjustment then follow it as stated in the work shop manual exactly and the the adjustment will be spot-on.
Any play now in the steering will be via ball joints or steering shaft u j joints.

Yes to reduce your play to a minimum, replace the Drag link and ties bar, and check the wheel swival ball joint's are also good to do that just jack the wheel off the ground grab it top and bottom and try and lift it up and see if there is any exssesive play

Yes your quite right I meant steering box. I did replace the drag link & ball joints before, but will recheck them. The drag link seems fine though. Also on the side of the steering box there seems to be another slotted bit. Is this also for adjustment ?

I hope you are not trying the play with stopped engine... there is a certain amount of play in any box(even if it's bran' new) while it's not under pressure so what ever you do do it with running engine

How to check and adjust a steering box.

Noted Sierraferry👍🏻 .I was going to take out most of the slack with the box off & then finetune it when back in. But I will instead reassemble the lower steering column uj & install &then put the box back on.
