Right its 39 deg C here in Bulgaria but we start thinking about winter early here!!!

Ill need to buy a set of decent AT's for winter - I have winter road tyres but they are totally hopeless, Id be better just leaving the summer road tyres on. Seriously they are crap!

Previously on 4x4's ive had great on/off road AT's but the road noise has been terrible - obviously there is a trade off between off road / snow / mud performance and quiet tarmac driving but I was looking for recommendations from people who have got the balance right.

Also cost is an issue but longevity is not.

I have AT's, the new ones and really can't complain. Heard good things about BFG's though. There you go - a choice of two.

Right ill go and see what the local excuse for BFG's not being available is and why i should buy some Rumanian crap with a wobbly un centered tread and a speed rating so slow its given in pictogram of animals - snail, tortoise, dog, hair, donkey, horse.

Im not kidding they still use horse and carts here on a daily basis!

This is the new-ish quieter version of the AT² from General:

25565R16GGAT | 255/65R16 General Grabber All Terrain

And they deliver to Bulgaria !!!!

Thanks for that Dave!

Will the 255/65R16 fit the D1 without modification - i tried the sticky above but its link is now dead. Im guessing it will at only 20mm wider than the current ones but best to ask!?!?!?

This size will deffo fit, but I just sent you that particular add so you could see what they look like and how much.

Std size tyres on a TDi 300 are 235/70/16 but the 255/65/16 have exactly the same rolling radius (so no changing of gearing or speedo reading) just a fraction wider. For your info the first figure in tyre specs is a measurement from rim lip to rim lip; not just width.

As someone above said, its probably cheaper to buy some decent tyres online over here and ship them over . Camskill for tyres are usually quite good and may ship to you .

Shipping to and from Bulgaria is UNBELIEVABLY expensive - just shipped a 13 kg small package to the UK and it was £110.00 ! However if your well organized you can usually get one of the better companies to special order what you need from wherever they get them from. It may take a month or two but it usually works out far cheaper then trying to do it your self.

After being here a year or two you get used to thinking 3 months in advance!

From the info ill deffo try to get the BFG AT2's so thanks chaps for the help.
