Hi guys,

This week I bought a 3.9 Disco 1 as a bit of a project. Got to admit it's the first Disco I've had, owned plenty of Land Rovers so know a few of the joys I can expect.

Anyway, it drives and the engine sounds and pulls well. The chassis is in good condition (comparatively). She will need a spot of welding here and there but no major drama as yet.

Two issues I do have:
1, When I select diff lock the light that is supposed to come on the dash does not illuminate. I'm not yet sure if this is because there is a problem with the transmission or just the dash light (praying for the latter). Without loading it back onto the trailer, pulling it to a hill and giving it a go is there anyway I could check this? I figure the first port of call would be to treat it as if it was the light that was knackered, sort that out and then see if there really is anything that needs doing.

2, The brake light that is supposed to go off once we've set off does not turn off. Now I know that all the fluids need a top up including brake fluid, if the brake fluid gets a top up and the light is still on, how desperate could this be? Are we talking total brake melt down? Or just a change of pads somewhere? Or maybe bleeding the system?

Any thoughts on either of these would be much appreciated. I am sure neither are major dramas, I just wanted to ask for a second, third or fourth opinion before I start playing with her properly this week.

Cheers,
Duncan

difflock - engage difflock, jack front wheel up and try turning it, if difflock works then it shouldn't turn, for example jack front left up with back left on the floor - front left shouldn't turn.

Brakes - I'll let someone with a bit more knowledge comment on that my guess would be maybe a sensor somewhere?

This works a treat, I found on my 300TDi that half the dash lights were not working so there is a common culprit. Also check your ABS sensor, always give a load of bother.

diff lock switch ontop of front output housing on transfer box are prone to fail prc2911 is new switch ,if wound in too far switch can inhibit diff lock

I'd drop all your fluids as well n replace them - diff's, transfer box and g/box... I got mine not that long ago and got round to doing the transfer box yesterday which was nearly empty!!!

Cheers. I'm at the 'drawing up long lists' stage. Everything is getting a change, bits taken off, bits getting checked and a shopping list is starting to form.

Found out yesterday at the Kent show slurry pit car park that my diff lock light would not come on,
(after ****ing myself laughing a stuck Toyota hilux). Diff lock was working though or i would have needed the services of Mr john deere to tow me out. Wiggled the connection on diff lock switch this morning and it came on, so a quick spray with wd40 and a coating of vasaline and it's all sorted. Worth checking that first. :)

Thank you. Sounds advice. I'll get on it. Shame you didn't get a picture of said Hilux ;)
