Hello & Help from the new lad, but I need a bit of guidance with my daughters landy, which I broke at the weekend.

Her 1979 88" Series 111 was doing well until whilst just as the clutch grabbed as i was about to reverse something went in the gearbox or transfer box and drive was lost in all gears, including reverse.

After a bit of pushing and shoving I locked the FWH's and put her into high ratio 4WD and got home in this mode but I need to fix it before my daughter throws me out!!
Interestingly the reversing lights stayed on all the way home regardless of which gear I was in.

Any ideas as to where to look for the problem would be great as i am stuck.

Thanks
Callum

rear diff or something in low box or rear portion of the output shaft of the transfer any really unlikely or more likely check your rear shafts take them out mabe you have broken one of em usually the short one (less give in it)
If it was a shaft it would explain how you got home in 4wd Jai

Most likely is a half shaft, probably the short one (RH) it is literally the job of minutes to undo the six bolts holding on the drive member and pu7ll the shaft out to check.
I suspect the reverse light is a different fault, and a coincidence

Nothing is a coincidence on a rover... The parts plot against us and fail in waves.

But yeah... Probably unrelated. Happens all the time on mine. I look for the solution to one broken thing, and end up following the wrong troubleshooting tip because something else is broken and I didn't even notice.

Thanks for your replies lads,

I had a wee look under the landy last night and when in 2WH and in gear the prop shaft doesn't turn and the handbrake won't hold the old back the old bus?? Does this suggest the transfer box or gearbox is dead or are you still thinking halfshafts?
Are there any tests i can do to figure this out before I attack it with the spanners.

Thanks for your help.

arent these conflicting statements?
If a halfshaft has gone - surely the prop will still try and drive the diff?
I agree that the halfshaft gone would make the hand brake ineffective tho.
