Hi

We bought my wife's Freelander 2nd-hand about 9 years ago and have never used the key in the driver's door, we've always just used the remote fob to open and lock the car, and because the key works fine in the ignition and occasionally to close the rear window it's never even occurred to us. Unfortunately the fob has now stopped working and when I go to try to open the door with the key it looks like the barrel was either replaced at some point or damaged - the key simply won't fit into the slot.

Unfortunately from what I read the only way into the car is via the PLIP or via the key - which leaves me stuffed.

Local auto locksmith turned up and tried to open the car by inserting expanding bladders in the door jamb and squeezing a long wire through and using the door handles, but the superlock stops that from working. I suggested he try accessing the CDL button on the dash but he wasn't able to exert enough pressure with the wire he had to press down on the button.

So the questions.

1. The dash alarm light is still flashing normally; nonetheless is it possible that it's simply that the battery is too flat to recognise the PLIP and therefore attaching a second battery (12v to the starter motor and 0v to the chassis) will re-energise so the PLIP will open the car? (Edit: suggestion from some more digging is you can't actually access the starter underneath on the Freelander, which explains why I couldn't find it just now crawling around in the dark.... I guess the next step is to remove the two 10mm bolts to pop the bonnet?)

2. If the lock guy does manage to get something that will exert enough force on the CDL button will it open the doors even when the car is superlocked? The manual at http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/LandRoverSecurityManual.pdf isn't 100% clear, so I'd like to be able to tell him whether it's worth bothering.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated too, I'm nearly at the point where breaking a window seems like a good option (come to think of it, q3) any ideas which window would be cheapest to replace? I assume one of the rear static ones?).

Thanks

Geoff

There's a good chance the door lock has seized from lack of use or worse the a extender bar has snapped to the drivers door lock. A little surprised you cannot get the fobkey to work again. Have you replaced the battery for the fobkey yet and quickly pressed five times to sync to open the door. As far as I know the cdl button on the dash will not work without the key in the ignition 2 position. How come the locksmith never tried the driver door internal handle while prising the door open.

CDL switch won't work when it's locked with the key/fob. Will work all other times.
If you turn the key in the ignition it will unlock the doors as it thinks yer trapped inside.
The RF receiver for the fob is on the windscreen side of the dash lights. If signal strength is low, try the fob when it's in front of the windscreen where the driver sits.
Fob batteries go flat but also the metal bracket comes away from the pcb. + side of the battery away from the pcb when yer fit the battery.
The key should still open the drivers door physically regardless of flat battery or not. I tried it once:

OK, thanks, shan't bother trying that then.

Lock guy checked that the fob is still transmitting.

Yeah, unfortunately this key physically won't slide into the lock. Whether the barrel was trashed at some point or whether it was just changed before we got it, I don't know.

I just spent 50 fruitless minutes trying to undo the 2 10mm bonnet bolts but got nowhere, dunno if they changed it but on this model (02) it has a metal block that just gets in the way of accessing the bolt and all that happens is I can't get enough purchase on the bolts and the spanner is popping off, I eventually gave up when the spanner fell into the engine bay :(

Yeah.

First thing he tried. Seems that the internal handles won't work when the car's superlocked.

Getting into the Freelander when it's superlocked is difficult. You can break a window. But I favour trashing the driver's door lock. Of your can get it to turn, you have a better chance of taking it off superlock. It's a tricky situation to be in, especially if you don't want to damage the car.

You say the Fobkey still works okay are you able to hear the lock activate but not able open the drivers door? Press your fob five times quickly again. Then go to the tailgate and keep you finger pressed on the fobkey to open the glass.

No, the fob is transmitting something but it's not doing anything - no indicator flashes, no CL noises etc. I've done the 5 times thing. I'm suspecting the ECU is faulty.

I have a locksmith coming out now who says he'll be able to actually pick the lock (guy last night didn't even try). Will see if that gets anywhere, thanks for all the suggestions.

Mmm, I'd definitely rather trash the lock than the window. Any idea how to go about doing that? :)

how much is a new lock set from LR?
how much is a quarterlight window from a scrappy?
*shrug* I don't know, but since the lock is broken anyway I'd rather spend a bit of money getting a lock with a key that'll open it (even if it doesn't match the ignition barrel) than break a window and still have a lock I can't use.

Turns out the key does fit the lock: the metal cover that slides over to protect it from the rain had jammed in place (spring had come off) and was blocking the key. Today's locksmith just pulled out the spring and removed the cover. Easiest £120 (fixed price for accessing the car agreed in advance) he ever earned, I think, I wish I'd had the confidence to pull the spring out myself (I wondered what it was when I looked myself yesterday) but I didn't know what it was and didn't want to blow something I shouldn't :(

Thanks everyone for your help though.

So the moral of this story is, Check that all keys have good batteries in them and regularly check the keys work in all the locks. (Yes this has happened to me)
