What year is it?
Auto or manwell?
Does the engine rev ok when stationary in neutral?

So it wont go above 2000 when stationary in neuteal?

If so i would be thinking fuel filter anorl which is why i asked when stationary as the engine is under a lot less strain so free to rev, but not during limp mode. If switching oft and on again does it go straight to limp mode with error message on the dash?

The aa guy connected his computer to it but didn't get a diagnosis. He did manage to clear the problem and it pulled the remaining 80 odd miles home without a problem while towing large caravan. Just concerned about it happening again. Had no lights or error messages at all and it was pulling like a dream beforehand. Started as we hit a steep hill coming out of Wales.

Randomly boot lid keeps coming undone. Wondered if that could be connected, but cutting the engine seems a dangerous safety measure!

The boot being open should give a warning on the dash

couple of things to check
Split intercooler/turbo hose by the sound of it. The first one to check is the short one at the throttle body, not always easy to spot either.
Also check the Maf sensor in the air duct, when was the fuel filter last changed & was it changed for a genuine one ?
