Lift Pump Problem

OK Took it back off today and when moving handle the arm was moving as it should, I took it back to shop just to get second opinion and mechanic tried it and said it was working perfect, did not have the old one to compare but I'm certain there identical. all he could suggest was using the spacer but told him that my old one did not have one on. Put it back on for now but did notice when it was off that as soon as pressure is pushed on arm as in pushing it inwards the handle does nothing when priming, when no pressure you can feel and see the arm moving. Tried holding it in place with spacer on and arm in the block but it did no pump diesel up, when I fitted it back on just before I nipped bolts up tight arm was moving with primer but once bolts were nipped fully in back to nothing again.
I must be doing somhting wrong or maybe I do need the spacer.

Use the spacer see what you get.

Now I'm thinking that the new one may have a longer arm then the old, which probably means Ill need the spacer. will have another go tomorrow hopefully.

OK Here where I'm at now. Put the spacer on and it works, primes up from hand primer perfect. Thank God for that I thought.
Until I went to start It up and it will not start, turning over ok but not starting, disel spilling from the drain plug on bottom of filter, I have also stripped the bleed nut on the top of filter so no sure if that's got out to do with it.
Any Ideas Please before I set light o it;)

You'll be pleased to know that diesel doesn't burn that well so unless you've got some petrol you'll have trouble setting fire to it.
The fuel filter should have a plastic jobber on the bottom that you should be able to tighten up. As for the pump does it actually do anything or is just the priming handle working?

The primer handle works with the spacer both old and new pumps are identical in size but the old pump never had spacer on. so cant figure that one out.
I just surmised that if It was priming by hand that the pump would be working ok. How can I tell if the pump is doing anything??

Crack one of the injection pipes whilst someone is cranking the engine see if owt comes out

To Dark now Mate, gonna try again tomorrow night, could It be the pump not working with the spacer??,
As for the bleed screw it is stripped will not tighten, will a new screw go back? in or will I need new filter housing?

Mine's a 300tdi with a delphi pump and my priming pump doesn't seem to do a great deal but as it starts first turn of the key I've never bothered playing with it, you may have moved the pump to far back from the cam by fitting the spacer that was my only thought

undo the outlet pipe from pump, then crank engine to see if inner lever is working pump

Could well be Mate don't know how many times ive had this new pump on and off since Sunday but its started every time with out the spacer as soon as spacer was fitted would not start. Think I might put it back on AGAIN without spacer and do wihout the hand primer.
Must get he T fixed on this keyboard.

try it at the lift pump to prove a point, though filter head will need replacing or repairing at some point
If its not working whats my best option should I put I back on without spacer?? then at least it will fire up. What is the hand primer actually for? is it important to have it??
Theres a landy breaker near me so will get a filter head off him tomorrow.

if it doesnt pulse out fuel remove spacer and retry test, hand primer isnt necessary as long as cam drives the pump ,most i come across dont or hardly work

Unsurprisingly it's for priming :p 300tdi' and I believe 200's also are self priming anyway but older engines had to be primed to force out any air from the injection pump, filter and injectors otherwise they wouldn't start

OK Thanks everyone, will give this ago tomorrow when I finish work, think I can change this pump with my eyes shut now.:) if that don't work can always go for a can of petrol. and finish the job, then get another hobby.;)
