Hi all.

The clutch was drinking fluid so i thought new slave, new damper - job done.

Wrong.

Took off old slave, pushrod followed it out naturally:mad: but all was dry and fine:confused:

Damper was a bit wet so i thought it was leaking - new one should sort that.

I put the slave back and thought i'd got the rod in the fork ok - WRONG!!!!

Fitted the damper and bled her up, pedal was soft, gave it a shove to be greeted with no pedal. Turns out the pushrod had gone OVER the top of the fork and the slave had spat its piston, rubber gland and pushrod out into the clutch:eek::eek::eek::eek:

After spending 20 mins swearing, i ripped it all out and managed to reassemble the lot, this time i made sure the rod went in right.

Bled it out and got a good pedal, but the damper was still dripping, turns out the flexi pipe to master cylinder was not sealing when tight:confused::confused: I'm guessing that it had been seriously overtightened and was mashed.

Of course, the shops are all shut now:mad: so thats it until monday:mad:

Unless there is another way to seal it up????

Basically the whole job was not needed, just a bloody pipe!!!!

I had thought that a small copper washer might do the job??

Any ideas???

Dave

Dave there should have been a black plastic clip on the end of the push-rod,to hold it in position on the fork-just for reference when you do the clutch

Yeah the damn thing was plastered with PTFE when i stripped it all, should never be needed on these joints, i tried a thin copper washer but no luck. Of course everytime you try something, you lose a pot full of fluid, stuffed £10 worth through it today, most of which is now on the drive and my shirt:mad:

The pipes were also assembled wrongly before, this likely gave me the poor clutch it had. The feed from the master cylinder went into the TOP of the damper instead of the bottom, this can give trapped air pockets and thus the poor clutch.

I'm hoping a new flexi pipe will cure the leak, also hoping i can get one monday. I dont think its worth bodging more PTFE in there, should have just got a pipe as well as the damper and cylinder:(

OK, turns out the pipe that is fitted is not even from a landrover!!!

I have got a new flexi pipe coming but the part from the master cylinder to the flexi is now obsolete and i will have to get something made up locally.

Thats probably why the damn thing was leaking, bloody idiot mechanics.

Ok, got it all off, the curly one is what i have but cant be right as the fittings dont quite mate with the vehicle hence the leak. The flexi is what i bought today and fits into the damper but the pipe from the master cyl to flexi is missing and obsolete so where would i get one made???

Also does the bendy bit look familiar????

Dave

Two hours on the phone and no-one has given any hope!!

Does anyone have a pipe they would sell me or does anyone know a hydraulic shop that knows land rovers???

Getting desperate now.

Dave

Thanks for the info and quick replies, much appreciated.

It turned out that the last number on my search list was a little shop that seems to know exactly what was required, took the flexi and the old junk with me and 20 minutes later i had the correct pipe in my hands :) It was worth the PITA drive, bloody roadworks.

I'll get her fitted tonight and just pray that my slave cylinder antics have'nt bodged the clutch fork or something.

Dave

Ok, the jobs a good 'un:)

The pipe went straight on, no leaks. Test drive shows a massive improvement, firstly, she now has a decent 'pedal' i.e. the action is spread out and not all in the last inch as before, its also a lot smoother.

Secondly, when changing up/down before, as the cluth was released, there was a lot of engine noise transmitted back into the cabin via what seemed like the bulkhead/pedal, i can only guess this was the bad damper and stiff nylon flexi pipe crap. Now when the pedal goes down, its silent, no noise at all:D:D:D

I'm really pleased with this result, she just gets better and better, brilliant.

Thanks for the advice, this is a great forum.
