Hi guys. I stupidily left it too late getting my car serviced and when i checked the oil level after hearing a slight tapping, it was pretty much running on empty! Now the knocking from the bottom of the engine is on all the time. She has had it! Just spent £880 in the garage a few days ago to add salt to the wounds.
My question is, can anyone recomend a decent company that rebuilds range rover v8's in Surrey?? It's also got LPG which i'm sure will just make things even worse :(
I have owned the car for 1 and a half years and i have serviced her 3 times already! I always try and take good care of all my cars. Just gutted that this time i slacked for a few days it has blown. It's done 6150 miles since the last service. Had i done it again at 6000 like i usually do, i wouldn't be here writing this message! :(

Obviously burns a lot of oil. Oil level should be checked between services as you have discovered.
I would suggest you look for a second hand engine, it will be cheaper than a rebuild.

haha yes i'm well aware it should be checked. I often do. Just not this time. Just been very busy and under a lot of stress over the last couple of months. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong all at once and now this. :(
I'm looking online for a new engine. Does anyone know a decent place that sells recon l322 engines?

Just try Emmotts and other breakers, with a bit of patience you will probably find a SH unit with low miles. Not heard of a Re-con shop for them, we live in a throw away age.
Is it the Jag AJ or BMW engine?

yeah i have been. Do you know if the M62 out of a BMW will EXACTLY fit into the Range Rover with no hassle? I know they are the same engine but are they slightly different in some respect? Will fitting just be a straight swap?

No idea, but I would expect things like manifolds and sump to be different, you have to swap the bits on the M51 to fit the P38.

and 150 miles over a service didnt knacker it surely?

It just so happened to have worked out that way. It was fine last week. I just had the rear bushes, rear disks and brake shoes done the other day. The rear bushes were making an annoying squeeking sound. That squeeking sound must have drowned out the first faint signs of the engine running a bit low on oil. I was just too slow this time :(

Even if you didn't check the oil the low oil level indicator should have come on as an early warning ???

You would've thought so! lol
I did get "stop oil pressure" yesterday when i had to slam on my brakes for some wally who pulled out on me. It just flashed up for a sec then went when i stopped. But that was only yesterday. I had already noticed the knocking sound by then.

Something as simple as an oil level warning indicator would have saved my car from human error. Which is the whole point of it. But no, it's a Range Rover. Simple is asking too much.

As far as I know they should have an low oil sensor fitted?
As they even have them fitted for the coolant levels

Maybe your sensor was dead ?

A BMW M62TUB44 is essentially the same - BUT - Land Rover sepcified it must run in certain conditions, i.e. 45deg angle, revised torque and power curve to enhance low down torque etc etc....

Dimensionally it will fit, but it may not be wise.

I feel sorry for you but crickey - how long does it take to check your oil? 30 seconds? I check every fill up - regardless of the age of the car. Oil coolers get damaged, unions can come undone, level sensors fail.

How accessible is the sump? Maybe you could try slapping a new set of big-end shells in.

so have you topped the oil up now, and if so how much did it take. does the noise sound like a knock or a tapping?

i put 4 litres in which was easily enough. It's a tapping noise with the odd knocking sound now and then like lose bits of metal floating around inside. I'm off to the garage in a minute to get it checked but i'm sure it's nackered. It could be the VANOS unit or even a CAT but i'm not that lucky.
