L322 L322 TD6 what's it worth 220,000 miles

Hi all.
So a little advice please, I've been offered a L322 Td6 vogue 04 plate with 220,000 miles on it.
It's a one owner car with technically a full history, I know it's been done and some of th work but have nothing in writing.
I was given it on sale or return by the owner who knows I like messing with landies and I cars in general.
I've picked up the car which has no mot, it needs a front screen 2 tyres a rear light maybe a front light. Fog light broken and the steering has far to much play.
Aside from the mot work the sunroof is gaffer taped as is a wing mirror, the other is lose, the door lock and remote locking isn't working so the car can't be locked unless your inside, the lock button does work.
The outside has scratches most will mop out. The inside is messy but most bits will clean up, the steering wheel up/down adjustment doesn't work. Ans I'm sure a few other bits are wrong, the clock was wrong so guessing the battery is shot and I think the air ride will drop overnight as it was parked up yesterday and was down when I got there. Also it didn't raise until I turned the lift knob.
So, what's it worth as it is?
With bare minimum done for mot?
And with the obvious work done to sort out gage faults?
Is it worth fixing or best as a breaker?

the trouble is, it wont be worth anything when all the jobs are done.And the cost of the parts are as you know are astronomical

Well they do get advertised for upwards of £3500 but being advertised at is different to selling at, just wondered what people's experience of sale prices actually is

It goes well and drives great other than the steering play. The lights I can get for around £100 so that leaves the screen and steering for mot. Then the other issues I could take my time to fix. Then flog it for whatever it'll fetch. Must have a value as a running car surely???

A high mileage TD6 is always going to be a risk for anyone with sense, unless it has a recon/new gearbox as this is the biggest killer of these cars.

Yes, everything you say can be fixed, but L322 parts prices are stupid for a lot of things and surprisingly cheap for others....No job is easy on the L322 as they are a complex and confusing vehicle but if you have time, money and patience they are quite rewarding.

But a 2004 with over 200k miles will only return you £4k as an average condition, £5.5k for a nice unmolested example with gearbox history, or even sub £3k for a bit of shed.

Go into it with your eyes open and don't expect to turn a profit.....

They are a fantastic vehicle, but in terms of re-sale value, they are probably the worst performers %-wise.....

Gearbox history is good, in that it's on its third new gearbox 20,000 ago, I can have the car for 2 grand but think that's to much considering the work it needs. I recon it'll cost upwards of a grand to fix the faults. And I'd say it's worth 3 grand as a good fixed up vehicle with only minor cosmetic issues. I value the car as it is at £800 but I'm no expert hence the post.

Not being funny (promise) but it's worth what your willing to pay for it... She needs work, that's obvious and parts arnt cheap. You could be getting into a "cheap" money pit. Also unless your planning on keeping it forever with over 200,000miles on it the resale won't cover the parts you've put on it to get it through its Mot.

I understand the negativity. But I don't see any of these anywhere for less than 3 grand. I fully accept they aren't worth that but show me an l322 with an mot for sub 3 grand let alone 2 or even a grand???
I haven't bought it and am under no obligation to buy it and some proof that they really aren't worth the money would help me. I just can't find the proof anywhere

So to get it through MOT might be a challenge.

Just to give you a piece of advice (and I like hopeless cars) just total the parts spend from eBay as a proxy. That will give you the exact amount of money you have to put on top of the money you will spend to buy it.

Find the sticker on the car where it was purchased and call around to see what you can get. Anything will at least let you tell it has a part service history. 1 owner car will be to your advantage if you want to sell it on and will explain the trip to the moon and back (200k+).

Fog light broken and the steering has far to much play. - If the car has 20" and you will go for new fronts then say budget will cost you £100-£120 for both if you dig far enough on fleabay. If the car got the standard wheels then hopefully cheaper but still £100 is expected. Part worn tyres are cheap as anything and if you got like 3mm then you will legally pass MOT but the choice is yours. Front screen I would do on insurance so probably £60-£80 excess. If you go privately considering the screen is heated you will pay the premium. Not many second hand windscreens about. I found a TDV6 windscreen on eBay for a £100. Not 100% sure it will fit. Will you fit it yourself? As I think if you pay a company to do it they will say we will not fit it nor guarantee the swap driving your towards a new screen. And the wiper sensor is glued there too! A light for the front another £100 roughly speaking if its is the base model with no facelift. Probably another £100 for the rear cluster. I've seen a pair of fog lights for £30.

Wing mirror you can repair if the cogs are gone and the set will cost you around £40-£50 to put both right and get them to close on the button otherwise. Mirror replacement would be around £120 for a second hand unit. As per your locking issues I replaced one door latch into my 03 from an 06 with a lil retro fit. Cheapest on eBay around £30 going up to £120 depending on your model and issues.

If its messy inside you may as well do it yourself because no £5 carwash will not cut it. My steering wheel adjustment broke and I fixed it myself you can check the repair out in the Mods'n'Fixes thread I posted. It was mechanical failure and the steering wheel was going up and down which is MOT fail. If your module failed then £130 on eBay. Then not many replacement parts after. Battery will be £80-£120 depending on the brand you go for. Air ride can be anything from sensors, air pump, airlines, air bags themselves. Get diagnosis on it.

So, what's it worth as it is? Like £1500 upwards for parts Of course this is me just scheming for parts but if you start digging and haggling like on a Egypt holiday you might get it cheaper. £50 MOT. I'm not counting the the suspension repair cost both physical play and the air faults. Get it diagnosed first. So for that alone add £200-£300.

Still if you paid £800 for the car £1500 for the parts and X for labor considering not going upwards of £3k you will have yourself an okay car and maybe a little profit in it. But you will never get the time back!

Cheapest running L322 on Autotrader is 4k. That is 4.4L and the cheapest TD6 is 4495 which is the one I posted above. So you willl probably come 1k shy of the buying price.

By the way distance to the moon is 238,900 miles so not far off!

Thanks bitnix I probably should of said that I know the car very well, I worked for the owner some years back, in fact I sorted out the deal to buy the car in 2004. £53000 ouch, I know it's been neglected a little cosmetically but mechanically was always maintained regardless of expense and know that the gearbox is fairly recent.
I would do most of the work myself and have friends that will help if i can't do it so mainly any cost will be parts.
I've spent some time cleaning it up today, the remote locking is now working as are some lights that weren't working and washer jets plus a few other bits.
I'll look up the steering adjustment and how to fix up the mirrors.
I'm very tempted to see how cheap I can get it, much nicer than my disco 300tdi

Well I am rooting for you! Drop some pictures on this thread to let us see what is what. Fair play there are no working ones with the ticket for less than 3k. You can think that instead of waiting to fix this one you should just go buy one of them cheaper ones that are available right away. But if you take your time with it and really haggle for parts and scrape them out cheap from the models being broken for parts then you can have something that you keep for good money.

Resell value is not the issue. People will be running from the mileage. No one in their right mind who is a regular car user who knows nothing about RRs buys a car with 200k+ miles on it (and if you know what RRs are all about you will run away even quicker). And sellers who have a banged up car with 200k+ rather scrap it. So that is why they don't sell or people don't bother to spend money on advertising it. If you put a ticket on it and reproduce some service history then wait long enough some farmer will come get it for 3-3.5k.

And oh well making a big thread with plenty of pictures on the forum can make you some history! And we all enjoy to watch.

My thinking now is that actually nearly everything works and if the bits I've fixed today are a guide then most bits seem to be easily fixed. Obviously I know some parts are needed but as you say, get them as cheap as possible and keep the spend low,
I think I've talked myself into trying to get it cheap and use it as a rolling project.
I need to find out the cost to get it mot'd but once it's got a ticket the other bits don't worry me if I have time while I'm using it. Even the air ride works well, no noisy compressor. It's appears it's had a new battery very recently as well as new discs all round and rear calipers

Well MOT mainly is a visual test apart from the safety e.g. brakes etc. but you should sort out the play in the suspension and steering first otherwise there won't be MOTs. =)
