Good day all.
First post and im sure it wont be the last.
I have read a lot about the gearboxs on here and i think i know the answer!! But heres my problem

2005 td6 vogue 126k
I noticed that thebox was not quite right a few times, would not change up now and again.

But yesterday after towing a trailer i lost drive!!
Stopped it left it a few mins and had drive again so managed to limp it around the yard.

Ok so i if i start it select D or R it will drive for say 200mts then and only if i stop it will not drive again.
If i turn off and restart say after 30secs i can do the same all again then lose drive.
If i play with it after starting i have full function then it slowly stops drivin, so have to rev it to say 2.5k and you can feel the touque converter trying to shift it to move then it will stop driving.
Once its stoppes driving, D or R its like its in natural, van rev away and it sits going nowhere.

Turn it off for 30 secs and you have drive back.
Lots of standing water yestersay.

Any help would be greatful.

Thanks

Its going in my workshop 2mro so Mechanic is going to check that and see.

Feels like starvation as it does load up but then stops.
The 2 stage lock up clutch in the torque convertor breaks up and clogs everything up, plus the valve block is made of fudge. Bemble is the man who would know, but budget for a new box and torque convertor.

Thats what im expecting tbh, but just with it driving fine for that 200mts and switch off and restart its fine again. Wishful thinking but you know lol

Dropped some oil out. Brownish not over dirty, it drove in rhe workshop fine,
Slight noise from the box when at idel.

Part from that no idea.

I know it's very basic but, when was the last oil change? Also has the gearbox been done, and ifnsonat what mileage?
As Datatek said @Bemble is the gearbox God. Other gurus are available such as @holidaychicken , @Saint.V8 and I think @biketeacherdave might be playing with the L322s , as well now.

No idea if the box has ever been done, or if the oil has ever been changed.

That is oil we took out this morning

TD6 box is a GM, completely different to the V8 ZF box.

It's notoriously soft because the break up of the convertor lock up clutch has a route into the box itself, unlike the ZF which can suffer convertor failure without the box lunching itself.

If there are no sparkles in the oil then it's certainly worth doing an oil change, along with a filter, as possibly the filter is getting choked and starving the pump.

Could be gunged up internals, so may be worth doing a few sump dumps over say 500 miles apart to see if anything loosens or improves, as fresh fluid is detergent like and will clean the workings to some degree.

Lots of little oil ways in there, and seals etc.

That oil is disgusting.

I'd budget for a gearbox..

I already have budget for it tbh. But you know slim chance its starvation of some sort.
Just with it having full power on start up.

And what sounds like oil pressure building, the noise goes once i lose drive.

Any recommendations on gearbox suppliers?
So many advertising and most have good and bad reviews.
Dont need fitting just the box.

There are sure to be some but a slightly less general location might bring out those who know of more local suppliers.
