Hi guys.
Just a quick question to double check something..........i need to put some coolant in for winter as i only have water in it at the moment..........as there is no coolant in it, am i right in thinking that i can now use any colour? Also what is the best make coolant for the 44. V8??

Thanks in advance.

Not sure on the L322...but using just water is not the best way t orun the cooling system....

The mixture of metals and materials used in most modern engines will cause what is called dissimilar metal corrosion.

On Aircraft where the stringers and frames are joined to the skin and other parts, they use a compound (we call it Yak Sh!t) sandwiched between the two materials as an isulating barrier to prevent this type of corrsion.

In the cooling system of you vehicle, the water is acting like an electrolyte and actually increases this type of corrosion inside your engine water ways where the two differenent metals meet.

Most Modern Anti-freeze liquids, contain an inhibitor to prevent this dissimilar metal corrsion for mixed metal engines....

I would advise running anti-freeze in your engine all through the year....

Celloseal or PRC if a gas, fuel or water seal is required. :):):)

I know to use it all year round.....it's just something i haven't got round to re doing since i sorted my leak out. Wanted to make sure the leak was fixed before i put expensive coolant in it :)

That is some of the sealant and insulating barrier gunk (Yak Sh!t) used in manufacture of certain aeronautical components and structures.....not a coolant or such...

As for which coolant to go for, I would just look ofr one suitable for use with Mixed Metal engines, some say the best you can afford, others don't have that luxury, and use what comes to hand, aslong as there is something in their I guess.

You could check your Handbook and see what is quoted....for the P38 they recommend, Havoline XLC in a 50/50 mix year round, unless extreme temps are expected below -36degC.

The reason you put antifreeze in ( well one of the reasons anyway) is that as it gets cold the water will freeze and then expand, as it expands it will then crack your engine and other components that take the water to and from your engine, so its more than a good idea its absolutely necessary, I think it also has rust inhibitors in it as well, and a load of other things that elude me right now, the best antifreeze is the pink one, I cant remember why at the moment, but I vaguely remember it has more properties for summer and winter use than the blue one, also get concentrate not the one that's watered down already

I was answering reference sealants and corrosion inhibitors used in aircraft production mentioned in a post. Celloseal zinc chromate is used between metal components to prevent fretting. PRC (Product Research Company) sealant is used for sealing fuel tanks and pressurised areas on aircraft. Sorry if it went over a few heads.:):):)
