Have a problem with out 2.5 turbo diesel (1998 defender).

Problem only occurs when hot. A clattering knock when revved (with or without load), and a tendency to stall when foot is taken off the accelerator, whether under load or not.

I've checked the injectors, by running at revs and undoing the union pipe - the noise persists.

Is the engine low on oil or has it been low on oil? Has the engine been overheated? Is the engine breathing heavy?

engine has been breathing heavily for a few years.

Yes, it had run low on oil, but not below the bottom mark on the dipstick.

haven't had a chance to check, will do so tomorrow.

If your diagnosis is correct, doctor, what course of treatment do you propose?

engine strip. cylinder rebored and oversized piston fitted or sling a new lump in.

I had it with my old 300tdi

I sold my knackered engine for more than the replacement. stripped and sold seperately as head, block, turbo, starter, vaccuum pump, alternator etc

If your stethescope is inconclusive then get a compression test done. On the plus side it could also be injector knock. Hold onto the injector pipes and see if one of them pulses in time with the engine knock.

Tried the screwdriver test. Can't pick up any particular noise from any one cylinder. Felt the injectors, one did seem to 'knock' a bit more than the others. Swapped it out for an old one, no change.

Very puzzling, engine starts easily from cold, sounds fine when cold (not even smoky). No back pressure on dipstick hole.

The noise only occurs once the engine is hot.

Yeah, waited until the engine was hot and noise started.

Going to take rocker cover off next.

Just looked

The rocker-valve clearance on several valves is over a mil. Will fix that, then see. Bet it's not the problem thou

Sorry to bring up an old(ish) thread... and post about a different model....my Series 2A (1966 Diesel N/A 109) has started knocking today. I have been told that it is brething heavily and that basically the engine is on its way out. I filled the oil to a normal level last month and have probably done less than 100 miles since.

Is there anything that can be done in the meantime to prolong the engine's life and money in my pocket??

If not, how much could I be shelling out to get it sorted?

Thanks

you are either looking at an engine rebuild which if you are competent with the help here isn't that difficult or expensive, or look to swap engine for a 200tdi, personally my advice is the latter.LEE

Thanks for the advice. I am not at all competant with anything mechanical but have a friend who is.

How easy is it to come by a 200tdi engine to put in the Series? Also, does this impact on the insurance at all?

thanks again.

Just to add; checked the oil and it was just above the low bit on the dipstick. Oil was all over the engine block as well. The oil cap was loose, cant seem to get the bugger to fit tight. Could this low oil be an issue with the problems I'm experiencing?
