knock from rear wheel

hi everyone

noticed when going over a pot hole or coming off a kerb my rear passenger side wheel makes a loud knock!

what's likely to be the culprit?

It hasnt any of the usual creaks on reversing/turning that i'd associate with the subframe fault - it is a definate thud/knock as if a 20kg dumbell had just been dropped into the boot!..
I'll check the suspension and damper tonight..eek
