Bought it unseen for $2500 which is around 1250 quid using the equivalent of eBay which is trademe.co.nz in new Zealand...

Seller seemed honest enough over the phone etc...but...

I'm ok with it in general but the engine has bad knock not mentioned by the seller which could be the vacuum pump or something worse but it will get parted out if the motor is toast.

This one was imported when new and so has a good service history and a genuine 320,000 km on it, it has the 20L motor so no EGR or EDC which are plus points for me, it has ABS and air bags and 7 seats.

At least we don't suffer too much from rusty cars here, no salt is used on the roads as we rarely get frosts, this car has about 150mm of rust in one side of the boot floor seam but not bad enough to need welding but that would not be hard to do anyway. It's got a little bubbling around the alpine windows. I've not found any other rust of significance yet it seems well undersealed with a rubbery stuff, as does a mates 97 V8 one (which also has very little rust).

So far I've fixed the abs light using paper clip technique, fixed passenger door which could not be opened from the outside, unblocked the aircon drains after finding front carpets soaked, fixed a partially melted blower control switch, replaced a split PAS high pressure hose. Stripped the very dirty seat covers off the seats and washed them a right PITA but the wifes idea :-(

To do, the engine knock! if the knock is not too serious then do the cam belt, then get the aircon pump working which is going to be PITA as it's an electrical fault and not obvious like a fuse - the pump clutch works fine when hard wired it's just not getting power when turned on, and it's not the aircon fluid pressure switch either...and the wife will want it fixed come summer.

Then sell the hilux surf 3.0 SSRX which overheats when towing and"train" the wife in towing a horse trailer with the landy, the reversing part will be fun, not.

Oh, and do the odd bit of off road stuff! Fingers crossed the engines not toast as it's a pleasure working on this car compared to the surf and yep its british like me and this is a PROPER 4wd unlike the surf which has plenty of grunt but gets stuck in the loose stuff far too easily.
