Coming back from Manchester this afternoon over the Woodhead pass. Pulled out to overtake a truck, floored the accelerator but nothing explosive happened. She dropped 1 gear and gently accelerated me towards the on coming car. Scared me ****less.
Tried it a few times over the rest of the trip but all it does is drop a gear move smoothly along. Sport button makes no difference.
Tried the wife's 99 4.6 when i got home and hers takes off like a rocket when you floor it.

Anyone know how does the kick down thing works?

Has to be a quick pedal movement and suitable conditions or it won't work, ie. speed, gear & torque? related.
On other cars there may be an actual pedal activated switch (Beemers)

Might be a sign of slipping what are the revs doing when this happens increasing higher and higher? is is just fourth to third what about third to second try testing in sport mode most effective response in this mode it will always kick down easyly with little peddle movement in all situations look at what the revs are doing at point of change over and there after and we might be able to understand better

How many gears does the kick down effect??

I ask as if if lightly booted my will always drop 2 gears....(unless it is in 2nd already obviously) and at times this can cause the revs to skyrocket....

Is this normal behaviour or should it drop one cog and if that is not enough, drop another....??

The sport button appears to make no difference at all. Never really used it before so don't know how long it has been like this. Don't think it is the TC slipping as the revs are not getting high enough. I will do some testing tomorrow if get a chance and maybe try the same test on the other one as it seems much more responsive to a heavy right foot.

Kick down, torque convertor unlocks, then it drops a gear or two, might feel like 2 or 3 shifts. There is I believe a good trouble shooting guide in RAVE. Mines diesel so not looked at the petrol.

I had trouble with my kickdowns a while ago, except that mine was randomly kicking down.

Seems to me that your tps might be a good first port of call - and your throttle linkage. It is working, just not quite right.

Mine turned out to be an oil soaked connector which was causing the box to lose communication with the engine ecu - yours sounds more of an adjustment issue. So possibly dodgy tps (can be checked with an analogue meter) or maybe just a stretched throttle cable?
