Kenlowe fans

Do these make any difference to performance/ fuel consumption?
are they worth the effort?

if by Kenlowe - yu mean electric fan - then yes worth having. If by Kenlowe, yu mean Kenlowe then no - they are too expensive to recover any saving.

they provide "around 8.5% fuel saving"

nuffink compaired wiv a lighter right foot.

av read that you can save around 5% by having the right amount of air in yer tyres

another 6% by emptying yer ashtrays and all the other junk that tends to get carted round but never used

untill yer engine has to work hard

Dunno, never worked it REALLY hard, but mine rarely changes from the half way mark, motorways, low ratio, steep long hills, sitting for hours ticking over, it's certainly never been near the temp top. Mine is in a defender, don't know if there's a bit more room under that bonnet for air circulation?

We run both of our Discos' without fans and they stay stable temps in all conditions.

forgive my ignorance: but which fan controls the cab/windscreen heater. Am thinking of an electric fan for the coming winter on the uderstanding my 300TDi will warm up quicker and an electric fan will put more hot air into the cab than the viscous. Or am I way off?

Would any fan do? cos fleabay has loads of fans, around £30 to £60, so would i just need to get the right size (14" for disco 16" for series if going by kenlowe sizes) and then either a copper bulb or inline temp sensor, and that dial to set the cut in temp?

there are 2 fans, the one the kenlowe replaces is the large one behind the radiator in the engine compartment, the heater fan is much smaller and is within the heater unit.
however you are right whenyou say that the 300tdi will heat up a bit quicker without the b****y great viscous fan, so you should get more heat from the heater on shorter journeys.

For those of you that have Kenlowe fans, (or simular), that go to Pay & Play sites, do you find that with the kenlowe fan fitted, that it gets clogged up with mud when you jet wash off your radiator?

I have been thinking of fitting one myself, but was worried about just blowing all the mud through my rad and into the fan housing?

Get a Kenlowe that sucks air other than blowing air through the rad. Which you would have to do if you have a/c, as the a/c fans take up the space in the front of the rad.

I fitted one recently to my 300 and the dial on the temp sensor seems to set very high for it to work as per the instructions. last but one notch on the high side of the dial

where is it set on yours???

I'm running twin Kenlowes on my 3.9RRC. I didn't use the Kenlow temp. switch, I got a much neater one and set it when the temp gauge was where I wanted it to be. No problems so far. I also put a switch in the circuit so I can switch the fans off so no problems when wading or washing out the crud.

I have been running a Kenlowe fan on my other car for 30 years and haven't had any problems other than replacing the sensor unit once.

Yes u must set the temp dial to a temp a little bit higher than that which the engine normally runs, for the fan to switch in, that means that engine gets a bit hotter and although i'm still unsure about it, I havent had any problems. The fan only works when in traffic.

My disco is still using the standard fan without any problems. So if it aint broke etc etc.
