Hi all

I got my first Land Rover yesterday, so pleased. Anyway, I have one small niggle with it that I wanted to run by the experts.

My Disco is a 93 K plated 200 TDi

When I start the car from cold, everything feels great. The gears all change smoothly. However, as the car warms up, the gears get progressively harder to select, to the point where they become positively "stiff". Also, when warm there is a defined "clunk" upon each gear change, I can hear it clunking into gear.

So, why so nice and smooth when cold then so tight when warm? It's totally opposite behaviour to any other car I've owned.

my gear box got very stiff after a motorway run. i added a bottle of LUCAS transmission fix its about £14 a bottle, it took most of the bottle to fill my box back up (just a top up). went for a drive and my box has never felt better, no stiffness at all. i now know the problem was low on gear box oil and nothing more serious.

i plan to do a full change at a later date and will use

a bottle of LUCAS transmission fix and gear box oil for a 200tdi is AFT-Q automatic transmission fluid

Change your gearbox oil - remember there are two gearbox sump plugs on an LT77 gearbox and remember to clean the mesh filter.

You'll need to buy 3ltrs of Dexron IId Auto Trans Fluid (ATF)

1. the "clunk" is not into gear it could be from any part beginning from the propshaft along all parts untill the CV joints..........happened to me, go under the car and check out if there is a backlash in the propshaft.....it must not have a bigger lash than 10 - 15 degrees.

2. Because at high temperatusres it's a dilation of the metal parts and the oil is getting thiner..............first af all, before getting into hard jobs adjust the gear lever bias(it's easy and could be efficient.....procedure described in RAVE)

Hi all

I've been doing a bit more searching,a nd whilst changing the oil does anyone think it's worth changing the part mentioned on this:-

Ashcroft Transmissions

Cheers

:)

Absolutely, it'll cost pennies and could improve things.

Remember you will need access from above to do this job so it's a centre console out - takes about 10 mins to be honest; if you have any reversing light problems it might be a good idea to change the switch (about £3.50) while you're at it.
